this hotel is very centrally located and the staff are very obliging and most of the speak a reasonable English. the rooms are clean and quiet well maintained compared to other Chinese hotels that i have stayed at. and eventhough i was there at the peak season [the canton fair] i found the room rates to be very reasonable not over inflated as many other establishment do

Room Tip: very helpfull staff and most can speak english

Close to the center, helpful staff, very good meal in the hotel restaurant and POOL ON THE ROOF!! To grab a beer, lay by the pool and watch the city - amazing! We simply loved the pool. We stayed there for two days and we guess this was together with HI in Shanghai our best experience.

Room Tip: lower floors could be a noisy as the street in front of the hotel is really very crowded

Need a better health club with a larger sauna and steam room and open for longer hours at night. The staff are really amazing and willing to help. Rooms are nice and clean. Location is at center near other big hotels.

Positives:
1) Comfy and clean rooms
2) Quick check in and check out
3) Decent amenities provided in room (e.g. shaver, toothbrush, etc)
4) Very quick wifi and broadband cable provided in room
5) Free shuttle to canton fair
6) Free 24 hour travel card provided on check in
7) Very quiet room, very peaceful sleep
8) Close to Garden Hotel, a bus station that provides links to many useful destinations. We took the bus here to Macau, 2 and a half hours
9) Airport shuttle bus stops behind the hotel every 30 mins, 18RMB per head
10) Many international restaurants within walking distance, albeit expensive
11) Decent level of English spoken by most staff
12) Quick service to room (Orders of room service and ice were always promptly delivered)
13) Decent sightseeing and museum within 30 mins walk from hotel

Negatives:
1) No subway station at doorstep, at least 10 min walk
2) Concierge not helpful with restaurant recommendations (I had asked for cantonese restaurants in the area and was told there weren't many in the are. I walked towards ouzhuang subway the next day and came across many many cantonese restaurants, not sure why the concierge had told me otherwise)
3) Very inflated prices for the Canton Fair (My corporate rate was 500RMB a night, but inflated to 1300RMB during Canton Fair!)

Overall a decent place to stay. My biggest complaint is that there are no subways in close proximity to the hotel. Would I come back? Perhaps... if I can find a hotel near Tiyuxilu Subway Station for about the same price, I would stay there instead, more central and accessible.

Room Tip: I stayed on the 11th floor, south facing side, was very quiet and had very deep sleeps

The hotel is well located, the staff is OK but the rooms stink. Once the elevator door opens the odor to humidity and old comes directly to your nose. I have been going to this hotel for the last 3 years and nothing has changed. This hotel is at least 25 years hold and needs to be refreshed.

When I made the reservation I requested suite 701. They replied that they will assign me suite 1301 which was newly remodeled. That was the biggest lie I ever received. The room stink to old.

Never again

After staying at nearly a dozen different hotels in Guangzhou over the years, I put this place right in the middle--well above the Chinese-branded places, but a step below most Western places.

The rooms are of average size for Guangzhou...Much bigger than Hong Kong, but small by Guangzhou standards. It is an aging property, and it seems they've done a little--but not much to modernize the place. That being said, the rooms were clean and comfortable. However, the bathroom is quite small, only a tub/shower combo, toilet and sink.

If the price is close, you definitely want to choose the Crowne Plaza nearby. (See my review from about 6 months ago)...It's leaps and bounds ahead of this place.

We did have an Executive Floor room--breakfast can be enjoyed either in the club room (less choices) or in the main restaurant (more choices, but a freakin' zoo during Canton Fair time). The evening reception had some hot appetizer offerings--they were okay, nothing special. Food quality in general here isn't very good--but I think that's the case for most of Guangzhou.

Two nice things about the Executive Floor here--6 non-alcoholic drinks from the minibar daily, and a RMB$100/day laundry allowance (not cumulative), but shirts or pants are over RMB$50--so you could get, for example, one shirt and a pair of underwear laundered daily and a pair of pants and a t-shirt the next day.

Although the location of the hotel is great, I think I prefer the Holiday Inn Shifu to this one...But both are several notches below the new Crowne Plaza.

Nothing particularly wrong with this hotel, but nothing overly special either...I'd probably need to see a REALLY good rate to go back.
