It was a business trip for me at Hotel Canton in Guangzhou.... sweetly located at the busiest Beijing Lou street.....(stone throw away distance).

How to reach - take a cab from the CAN airport (for non Cantonese speaking people, please be sure to have this written in Cantonese so that the cab driver can understand, else you may end up reaching some other hotel or not reaching at all as very few people understand English)

Rooms - are spacious and have all the facilities you need, but don’t expect a lot of English channels on your TV sets.

Food - the hotel specializes in authentic Cantonese food which could be quite good. For people who do not eat meat/fish/pork etc, be ready for a tough time as Vegetarian options are limited and one has to go out for meals etc but that's not far.

Hotel is well equipped with all the modern amenities and located nicely for people who love to shop. Evenings should be spent on Beijing lou street which is walking distance from the other gate of the hotel and is super busy over the weekend. You will soon realize that China has the largest population in the world, looking at the street. No international brands, however a lot of local Chinese brands and streets inside have lots of replica shopping, if one is interested. Just don't go with the guys selling the fake watches...

Overall a nice and decent place to stay,

Room Tip: Take room on higher floors for better city view

As expected the hotel reception is on the 2nd floor after the taxi dropped us off at the basement, no bell hop to welcome you but theres a lady from the hotel judjing by her uniform will lead you to the nearby lifts.
I must say the lobby is huge but thats it, no welcome drink despite telling us our rooms were not ready, told us we have to wait for an hour or so.

Room Tip: take high floors they dont keep to no smoking in the hotel here, everywhere reaked with stale tobacco smell

Let me start with the good - The rooms were very clean and the housekeeper was fantastic. Thats were the good stops.

As a frequent stayer in hotels this has to be the worst, let me explain why in dot points to make it easy.

- This hotel employees a number of students over the Canton Fair (trade expo) to make it look like quantity which it does but it absolutely kills the quality.

- The bar staff had absolutely zero idea what they are doing (i.e no idea what a scotch and coke is ) we got to know them and found out they have never been to a bar, drank alcohol and could never afford a drink in general due to the wages.

- We caught a male staff member in the restaurant spitting on the carpet. When confronted he admitted it , they made him apologise to us in person and apparently fired him.

- The management are basically kids (young adults) with zero experience and very minimal english.

- The buffet was the worst we've ever had - absolutely cold and horrible tasting - We didnt pay for this as we insisted.

- The wifi is literally inconsistent - dropping in and out

- The management team constantly tried to find excuses for everything.

Please note that this is not the day to day staff fault as we got to know them using google translate. They have been placed there as part of training. You do not train staff in the hotels busiest period.

Also - TV in the rooms , no english channels besides CNN

I would never stay there again. This management team needs a reality check.

Spend the extra few dollars and stay somewhere that you are valued.

My first impression inside of the hotel is the hotel is kind of old. It is very convenient located near many markets, shops and even 7/11. There is a safe inside my room, which is always very important when you are traveling to any foreign country. The WiFi was decent, the cleanness of the room is decent. This is not a five stars hotel so therefore can't expect too much of it. I will recommend anyone who wants a decent hotel without spending too much money.

I have visited this hotel in June 2012. It has nice location near to downtown and few steps to Beijing Road that has many markets, shops, resultants, etc. The bed was clean & confortable, room’s size is acceptable and staffs are supportive. The breakfast was below average. There is good swimming pool. Moreover, there is nearby mosque for Muslim.
