l loved this hotel. It was very clean, staff were extremely helpful and spoke english. Service was excellent. Breakfast had a great selection. The location is lovely. Very quiet and peaceful.Friends staying in a much more expensive hotel were wishing they had booked at this hotel.

We are staying at Victory hotel (since 1895), executive room west wing for 2 nights, we are at the end of 10 days business trip in China thru 4 cities and 5 hotels, we moved here to take a break from the intense business trips before we go home. I am sitting on the big private balcony sipping tea and watching the huge thunderstorm and heavy rain pouring down on Guangzhou. Wonderful and relaxing experience. Strong free wifi. Only the rooms facing the street have balconies, I requested a balcony in advance. Great value low price.

Hotel has 2 buildings, East and West, about one block apart, not connected, West bldg is original 100+ years colonial buildings in the old foreign quarter. Main entrance-lobby is East bldg, but the oiginal hotel was West which has been renovated, room is elegant and wonderful, marble bath is modern and unique open style, but can be completely enclosed with 1/2 inch sliding glass wall. I was told East rooms are in much older condition. even though it is a younger bldg. If you booked West, tell taxi to go straight to West, it has its own front desk.

Hotel is on Shamain island, but the river between it and mainland is an 100' wide river, not a pretty river. So close yet a world apart, with tree lined streets, beautiful European colonial buildings and very few people, a favorite spot for wedding pictures. About 15-20 minutes walk to Shanxiaju shopping street, over the overpass bridge, thru the spice market, dry seafood market, by the time you reach pet market next to Holiday Inn, you are there. Love that exotic smell.

Staff is friendly but reserved, they open up if you talk to them. Breakfast is big standard Chinese hotel fair with omlete-noodle station. Both East and West bldgs have exact same breakfast buffet. The foods in the western restaurant in the West bldg actually are made in the East bldg a block away and transport over.

It is almost impossible to get a taxi here, it is only 100' away from a very busy expressway and the busy over-crowded city, but taxis don't come here, you just have to wait for someone to come back to hotel which is not that often. Hotel shuttle at 2 and 6PM daily to Haizhu square and Beijing Road shopping area

A major flaw about Victory is food. Hotel restaurant prices are about double or triple than normal restaurants, a simple soup in the Western restaurant costs 68 yuan (over $10), 4-5 restaurants nearby are typical tourist traps with triple or even higher prices. One Day Guangzhou tour at hotel business office is 780 yuan ($120), but I saw ads in previous hotel One Day GZ Tour is 78 yuan, 10 times higher price. Since almost all guests are Westerners, as long as there is sweet and sour pork, everybody is happy. There is a Starbuck, 7-11 around the corner, Subway next door, Starbuck is rare in Guangzhou.

I like Victory Hotel and enjoyed the experience, but will not stay here again, I am here on business, I need easy transportation, and I enjoy good foods, tourist traps and lousy foods at triple prices are just not acceptable.

Room Tip: West bldg room with private balcony is excellent.

This is really a fantastic hotel in a perfect location in Guangzhou for business or vacation. This is probably one of the best hotels I've stayed in in China and I like it, because it's not just your standard cookie cutter international hotel chain. The West building is especially nice, because it's in a very nice old colonial building which has recently been completely re-modeled inside.

I stayed in the West building and had a wonderful room with a beautiful balcony and view. The interior of the room was very modern and nice, although the design was a little too funky, post-modern for my taste. The breakfast buffett was not all that great, but it did the job.

There are lots of things to see on Shamian island, but I highly recommend checking out the Starbucks next to this hotel. It's also in a refurbished colonial era building and it's the nicest Starbucks I've seen anywhere in the world. You can sit outside on the front porch and relax with your coffee. From the hotel you can also easily take a nice stroll along the river promenade or walk over to the ShangXia Jiu Road for some awesome dim sum.

Room Tip: Get a room in the West building with a balcony. It's worth the extra money.

This hotel has it all, perfect location. Good clean modern rooms. Comfortable King size bed. I had a wide screen digital TV as probably did all the rooms. Canal nearby, river close too, tree lined streets on all sides, good restaurants closeby. I ate at the hotel most days. Food is good. Plenty to choose from, especially lunch and dinner time. Both Hotels are exceptional. One on the east and the other on the west side. There is a useful shop next door that sells drinking water, snacks, beer and most things you would require. Also next door there is a subway restaurant. The food is just like home in Australia. Fresh and priced fairly. The view from my room faced the hwy, hospital and canal. Windows are double glazed so not much noise.
I found it safe to walk outside at night with and without my wife. There are all type of shops on the Island, from gift shops, bottle shops, craft shops to a unique massage parlour. Very professional. The men are massaged by men and women by women. All professional. I even found a catholic church not far from the hotel.
Unfortunately, my wife had a stroke while on holiday and to my amazement the management and staff helped in any way possible, from communicating with the ICU in the hospital, to discounting my room rate and included 3 meals a day not just breakfast. They arranged tickets to return back to Australia. Taxied us to the doctors and airport. They were like family.
Without their help we would not have returned home. That alone should make any guest feel comfortable and at ease that they would be in deed helped in anyway. I give this hotel 5 stars and will re book in future. Thank you all......NO THANKS to the Australian Consul General who did not help us in anyway, no sympathy, nothing....except advise. Big help....not!

Room Tip: We had a first floor room opposite the canal and it was nice.....

The hotel is situated in Shamian, a lush green environment with beautiful colonial architecture buildings next to a beautiful river. The bedroom is quite large, nice and well furnished with nice and large pieces of furniture. The lobby is beautiful and nicely decorated. Staff are quite courteous, though some speak little English, but they will do their best to help you. Bathroom nice and clean. There is a convenient store at the corner. I stayed there for four days only on my way to Vancouver. Taxi from the hotel to shopping centres, Canton tower etc. are not expensive. A stroll around the leafy suburb and along the river is a joy during the day and early evening. A night cruise along the Pearl River is a real delight.

The Hotel was very satisfactory, the rooms (West Building) were modern, clean and comfortable. Staff were always friendly and helpful, the breakfast was also satisfactory with a decent choice and above average quality. The Area is good with historical features and convenience stores nearby including Subway Sandwiches next door. Overall no complaints and would definitely stay here again on any future visit.
