Owner description: Right in the heart of this bustling city is a welcome retreat with an orchid garden, tropical plants, palm trees, fishponds and tea houses.

Good place for a leisurely stroll, sipping tea on a misty morning amongst the orchids. This historic garden was saved from 'development' due to its historic patronage by former Communist general Zhu De. This is a great place to relax away from the crowds in the midst of downtown Guangzhou. The clientele is mostly seniors, who get in for free.

The street entrance area is also interesting, with a concentration of Uighur food vendors selling Central Asian snacks from Xinjiang. The Uighur theme continues as you turn onto the busier street around the corner, only this time you are met by beggars instead of food vendors...this is not necessarily pleasant, but a slice of real life in this cosmopolitan city.

This mini forest with wide variety of orchids as its main attraction started as a miniature garden for plant specimens in 1951. The cultivation of orchids started in 1957. Since then, through gradual development, the orchid garden has expanded within this 36,000 sqm of land.

The best time to view the beauty of orchids is during Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) in Jan/Feb (different dates every year). On other occasions, one can escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the nature and peaceful environment in this mini forest. Spend a couple of hours here can effectively help you to relax and release stress/pressure. This effect is even more obvious on a normal day when it is not crowded.

It is a good place for students' educational tour, family outing and friends' gathering. There are 3 tea houses where you can enjoy Chinese tea and dim sum while the peace and beauty of nature.

While not all the orchids were in bloom when we were in town in late April / early May, the orchid garden was still a great place to see the orchid varieties bloomed in the greenhouse area, walk around the waterways and other paths and relax in an oasis right in the middle of the bustling city. We were told 200+ varieties of orchids and other plants exist in the gardens and I wouldn't be surprised if it was even more. We were also pleasantly surprised that there was a middle eastern market with great foods right outside of the entrance so that was a bonus.

The Canton Orchid Garden is conveniently right across the street from The China Hotel (The Marriott). It is a simple garden but with a few lovely areas and a few great orchids. My brother is an orchid specialist ( The Orchid Whisperer ), and I showed him the pix of the garden. He agreed that there are some lovely species here. I would definitely recommend going here if you have already done the other things you want to do in GZ as it is a garden and you need to go to gardens while in the middle of the big city.. I only gave it 3 stars because I think that there are other top picks I would recommend first.
