“Bad Customer Service...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 January 2011

I have been a regular customer staying at this hotel and other IHG hotels for a long long time and I was always satisfied with this hotel and the services I received however this time was a different story... The customer service I received was very poor, my booking was for a twin executive room... and as usual I checked-in and show the receptionist our passports (no point we felt welcome and the receptionist were not smiling) then we were given our keys to go to the room, when we opened the door the room was actually a double and not a twin which we booked for so we went back down to say, the receptionist said have you specified the room was for 2 people!!! Hello can you not see from my booking and also we showed you 2 passports and I am sure it is the responsibility of the front office staff to confirm the booking details?? Anyway the receptionist checked for other twin room and without any apologies for giving us the incorrect room in the first place! She said we will have to wait for 40 mins for the twin room to be ready (check-in time is 2pm and it was 3pm) again no apologies or offer to have a drink in the restaurant... then we found out the room she is going to give us has actually been downgraded to a standard twin and not an executive twin! The receptionist said she cant change or do anything so we asked to speak to a manager. Again the manager asked the same question if we have told the receptionist the room is for 2 people!!!! (Hotel and front office staff, please check your bookings and to confirm your customers' booking details when check-in) After a while the manager finally sorted this out and gave us a twin executive room but again no apologies given (dont know why the receptionist couldnt do this in the first place). We were pretty disappointed at the poor customer service and would recommend the management team to look into this and re-train their staff especially front office staff as they should provide first class customer service, it doesnt matter how nice your hotel is and how good the location is at, excellent customer service is the key!

Holiday Inn Shifu is a great hotel. Doesnt really look that good from the outside. But the lobby is pretty modern. The rooms are not Shangri la quality. But its a quarter of the price. The mall runs right along the hotel so its easy to go for dinner without worrying about taxis.

Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hotel. Don't be fooled by the nondescript entrance on the ground floor. Lobby is on the 4th floor which though not opulent is modern and elegant. Room is well-appointed, immaculate and HUGE, and looks as if it has just been renovated. Breakfast range was extensive with cook-to-order stations. Quality of the food was good. Not sure if it's the design of the cafe or the time of the year but the cafe was not crowded in all the 4 days that I was there, allowing one to enjoy the breakfast at a leisurely pace without having to jostle with badly-behaved tour groups or screaming kids and babies. Location is perfect, if you are into shopping. The shopping street (closed to vehicles) is just around the corner with lots of restaurants and retail shops. Also saw a cinema but did not have time to check it out. The nearest subway station is about 10 minutes on foot. You can also walk from the hotel to Shamian Island, an oasis in crowded, noisy Guangzhou, with charming colonial buildings criss-crossed with green pathways. The only disappointment was the gym in the hotel. Equipement was old and outdated. And there's hardly any range to speak of. In all other respects the hotel is a gem.

Having just stayed at a high end hotel in Hong Kong for a wedding, I was terribly impressed when I arrived at this hotel. In comparison to the HK hotel, the room was huge!! I travelled with 2 other people and the whole room accommodated 3 beds + a study table + sofa + amenities with plenty of space to move around. The washroom was huge as well.

I often travel within Canada/US and I was just floored in awe at how this hotel room was so spacious. Equivalent approx price per night: $100 USD/CAD

A little bit odd considering that the lobby actually starts on the 4th floor of the building... probably they're doing work on building restoration/preservation on the 2nd/3rd floors. The reception staff was inviting and very friendly. And the overlooking view of Guangzhou from the hotel room was amazing.

Beds and linens were clean... it felt just like home. I did not get a chance to try out the hotel restaurant but it looked pretty good.

Too bad the business center was not free. I wish they had free internet but I believe it costs about 1 RMB/min (ok, so in the grand scheme of things that's not a lot.... but free would have been nice)

It was my 2nd stay at the Holiday Inn Shifu. Both trips had been during the Canton fair and though the room rates had shot up during that period the stay was very good.

The rooms are nice and spacious , the service is very good and access to the executive lounge is great. The bell boy helped with getting me a sim card to use and that was great. The shuttle services both going and coming to the Canton fair was great and very comfortable. Most of the people staying here at the time were Americans or Europeans and the staff was extremely cordial with everybody.

The shopping street just behind the hotel was a great place for some bargain shopping and had several branded stores offering good deals too. Spent some time there absorbing the local atmosphere and it was nice.

The spread at breakfast was great and kept me going through most of the day at the fair. The executive lounge is highly recommended and once you get back to the hotel after a full day of walking at the fair the beer and snacks are very welcome. Also its a good place to exchange notes with other associates and visitors from different regions of the world.

Overall a great experience and though the prices were a bit on the higher side I don't see myself going anywhere else while in Guangzhou in the near future.

I stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. For the price I was really amazed by the size and quality of the room. Prior to my arrival I emailed the concierge to arrange some flowers for my girl friend - they arranged it beautifully. All in all, I can really recommend this hotel.

stay in this hotel since 6 years for visits in the area and for the Canton Fair. loacted in a real chinese shopping area, this hotel is always a good place to stay: clean and with all business features.
Easy to reach by taxi or with subway (10 minutes walking distance). good value for money.
