“Great Chinese Hotel”
Reviewed 17 April 2012 via mobile

We stayed at the Grand Royal for 3 nights while attending the Canton Fair, the place is quite weathered for its age but still very comfortable and the staff are very helpful.

The hotel is quite a long way from the city (80 - 100rmb by taxi), but is only 5 minutes from the exhibition centre and is quite close to a subway station.

The breakfast buffet is pretty good, watch your head on the way in if you're tall like me, there is a very low ceiling in the foyer, somewhat like the office scene in "being john malcovich".

All in all a great place, I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Lovely hotel, very opulent, but stayed in early January and there was no heating. After complaining we got a 1200w portable fire put in our room, and also had one alongside our dinner table!!.
Staff very helpfull, and the room was very nice and very claen............just very cold.

Located closer to exhibition centre about 10 mts by taxi, the hotel is good enough for a short stay on business trips. quite and well connected to the centre of the city by rail and public transport, there is a military base behind which disturbs your peace in the morning because of noise of exercise carried out by them. The staff are friendly and helpful though very few of them speak english

Staying in the hotel for 5 nights in 3 superior twin rooms, we're quite satisfied with the room and hotel's facilities. The rooms were clean and well maintained and beds were comfortable. Breakfast was okay, was sufficient for our morning meal. The staff were trying their best to assist guests, however check-in and check out process were quite troublesome. Even we have paid all our rooms for 5 nights stay and we have submitted our credit cards details when we booked the hotel, they asked for our credit-cards again and wanted us to sign the credit card slip in order to charge 1000 yuan per room (for the room security deposit) and she said she would return the deposit later when we check-out. However this matter turned to be quite a hazzle since the girl on the receptionist desk couldn't undo it due to the credit card machine error and said that our deposit would be returned in one month time. (???) hopefully there wouldn't be any problem with the credit card and bank matter etc. We think that the hotel needs to improve and speed up their check-in/out system too.

The room is nice, clean, spacious but the hotel location is questionable.

The problem is that the hotel is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Getting a taxi, at times, can test your patience. There are just not enough taxis in GuangZhou and there is even less taxis that passed by the hotel. I once had to wait for 30 minutes for a taxi and I had to stand on the side of the road, almost a block away, to wave down a taxi as none would have driven by the hotel. But to be fair, that was the only time and that was enough to make me very nervous as I was not so sure that I could get a taxi in time to take me to the train station to go back to Hong Kong

Another problem with the hotel is that there is a long, long barrier that bars pedestrians from crossing the street. This, in effect, makes it hard for your taxi driver to make a U-turn to drop you at the hotel if you happen to be on the other side of the road.

Free Internet access is available in the lobby. One can exchange $200 USD into RMB per day at this hotel - I think this is pretty much standard in China. I once tried to exchange $600 USD and had to go to a bank nearby - it took almost 45 minutes to get this done (:

Live piano in the evening. I didn't try the bar nor any other services at this hotel.

Breakfast is free for up to 2 persons per room. We had 4 in a room so it did cost us $10 USD extra per person for breakfast. Breakfast is very standard - Chinese congee and stuff, croissant, muffin, and fresh fruits.

There are other decent hotels in the TianHe district that are very close to the underground metro. I had to book this hotel as it's one of the few that would accept 4 persons (2 adults, 2 kids) for one room. If I were traveling with just my wife or if I were by myself, I'd book another hotel nearby the TianHe Distritct / Sports Center as it'd be much easier/cheaper/faster to get on the underground metro to visit other parts of GuangZhou

We booked here for our stay in Gounzhou as the rates where good and we had baby with and thought it would be nice as they had KTV. When we arrived at the railway in GZ we had to take a taxi for about 45min to get to the hotel... I think that should be enough said.. on location, on the otherhand if you attending the Asian games this year it will be a great loation as the new stadium is just a 5min walk away or 2min by taxi.

After much delay we arrived tired and kind of frustrated as we wanted to be closer to the markets for shopping, which is situated in the central area. We were welcomed by there friendly staff and explained to the reception that we meant to stay closer to the markets she smiled and recommeded another hotel and upgraded our double room to a superior free of charge (which was cool) the next day they had the hotel name that we could go to and organised a taxi for us that took us to the hotel (now that is priceless service).

The room was so spacious it was basically a bachlor pad with full lounge and kitchen its was amazing. Also the breakfast in the morning was crazy we had two personal waiters ready to assist but at the same time not cramping your space. (again great service).

I would recommend this hotel for a Honeymoon, you just wont need to go anywhere else.
Thank you for making our stay pleasant and understanding!

This hotel is unique mix of comfort and affordable tariffs. Its has all kind of facilities with ultra modern systems. The rooms are very spacious , clean very well located , with nice views. The food offered is fantastic with so much of variety and moreover it has a separate Japanese and Cinese restaurants. Also available is the KTV rooms. The staff is very efficient and alert to help you any time of the day. Small small needs like ATM, some basic shopping, travel tickets etc are available in the hotel itself.

The hotel is on a very important road of Guangzhou , Zhongshan Ave. makes it easy to reach and accessible from lots of directions.

Moreover it s stop for the Baiyunport bus service , makes it more comfortable for people
to travel to airports.

Overall its a fantastic place to stay and enjoy, high recommended to everyone
