I stay at Shangri-la hotels whenever I can throughout the world. The Guangzhou Shangri-la is a bit of a disappointment. It's location is only good for people going to a trade show or convention at the convention center. It is FAR from central Guanzhou and unless you are very adept at Chinese, it is NOT convenient. Inside, the rooms are spacious but they are not done with usual grace and elegance of other Shangri-la hotels. The styling is not even handed or consistent. It's as if it is trying to look expensive and refined, but comes off as over designed (almost cheap) by a suburban wanna be (example the triple tray ceiling in the guest rooms with tacky light fixture in the middle). It seems designed for the local market, not to world-class standards. In contrast the Shangri-la in Kowloon is a masterpiece of world-class sleek design, high end finishes, restrained elegance. The food here is good, but the inconvenient location, the slow wi-fi, and the design prevent it from getting a higher ranking from me, much as I love Shangri-la hotels.
