Shangri-La Hotel Guangzhou
Ranked #12 of 3,522 Hotels in Guangzhou
Reviewed 4 December 2011

I stay at Shangri-la hotels whenever I can throughout the world. The Guangzhou Shangri-la is a bit of a disappointment. It's location is only good for people going to a trade show or convention at the convention center. It is FAR from central Guanzhou and unless you are very adept at Chinese, it is NOT convenient. Inside, the rooms are spacious but they are not done with usual grace and elegance of other Shangri-la hotels. The styling is not even handed or consistent. It's as if it is trying to look expensive and refined, but comes off as over designed (almost cheap) by a suburban wanna be (example the triple tray ceiling in the guest rooms with tacky light fixture in the middle). It seems designed for the local market, not to world-class standards. In contrast the Shangri-la in Kowloon is a masterpiece of world-class sleek design, high end finishes, restrained elegance. The food here is good, but the inconvenient location, the slow wi-fi, and the design prevent it from getting a higher ranking from me, much as I love Shangri-la hotels.

Just like in other reviews if you where not attending a trade show you would probably not stay here, but if you are it is the best. I just love the Shangri - La hotels and would strongly recommend to everyone to check out their locations and give them a try. This hotel is perfect in every way, staff, gym and pool and exceptional. As well as the traditional Chinese food they also offer a Thai and Italian restaurant. A nice bar for meeting and relaxing after a day at the fair with a cold draft Heineken or Tiger.Breakfast is fantastic with a wide choice that can see you through the day. Don't look forward to the fair but do look forward to coming back to this hotel again.

Room Tip: ask for a river view if possible

The hotel is situated along the river and definitely not easily accessible unless there for a trade show. Nothing local is nearby and that includes, restaurants, bars, shopping or virtually anything else.
When booking get breakfast included in your room rate otherwise is is about 50 dollars for two for a very medicore buffet.
Rooms are satisfactory and clean. It is a convention hotel so expect minimal service and quality because they know your there because its close to the convention centre and you wouldnt stay here if it wasnt.

This hotel is a fair way from the centre of Guangzhou, not all that close to a subway station and is generally out of the way. It was clearly built for the trade show market and is really well located for that. Those qualifications aside, it is a fantastic hotel with just about the best of everything. I would not stay again because of the location as I would prefer something in the middle of the city but....

I have never had great experiences in Guanzghou with hotels in 20 years. This was the exception not only is the hotel right next door to the trade show but the rooms are comfortable and the food outlets outstanding. Best breakfast selection I have seen anywhere - ever. They offer a wide range of English speaking TV channels and the gym and pool facilities are exceptional. The Staff all speak perfect English which makes the whole stay wonderful and so easy. Jackson the concierge was able to get me to any number of destinations in time to watch the mighty AB's beat France in RWC final. Vincent the F & B Director had no problems in organising our dining bookings and was totally charming. The beds are still a little too firm but still comfortable. I would definitely return.

Room Tip: Guangzhou is not the have to go to city for tourism but if you are going to the Trade Shows this is...
