How Flowers Youth Hostel
Reviewed 10 November 2011

The location is near the train and bus station, but it's down a little street and up some stairs. Tough if you have lots of luggage.

This hostel is economical however nothing special, rooms are small. There is a co-ed shower/toilet that looks newer than the rest of the hostel, which is a little tired.

Some of the desk staff are very helpful but some not as much. I was trying to get directions to the bus station for a bus to yangshuo and the girl at the front desk just told me to go to the train station. Yet I knew the buses at the train station were not direct, which I preferred, and possibly more expensive than the bus from the bus station. A little disappointing that they would push this option instead of just giving me directions to the bus stations, only a 10 min walk away (same side of the street as the railway, easy to find).

The primary benefit of this hostel is the location near the airport shuttle stop and railway station. It is far away from the downtown attractions and in a sketchy alleyway. The facilities are in desperate need of renovation: shower doors won't close, there is no dryer for clothes, and some windows are exposed. On the upside, they did have hot water and the staff is friendly.

Guilin Flowers hostel is a friendly, sociable hostel with excellent facilities. There is a huge lounge and communal area which is an ideal place to meet fellow travellers. There are two PCs with free internet. The hostel also serves food throughout the day. The staff are friendly and relatively helpful, speaking decent (although not fluent) English.

The hostel is located about 5 minutes away from the train station. It is a little difficult to find, tucked away on a side street. Make sure you have the hostel's name written down in Chinese. Several buses go from the main road towards the pagodas and other sights in Guilin.

We stayed in a 4-bed dorm which was spacious and comfortable, with good air-conditioning. Each bed had a plug point by it. The bathrooms were very clean and very modern. There are no Western toilets in the hostel, only Asian squat-toilets, but these are cleaned regularly.

The staff were so helpful. Definitely book the bamboo raft trip down the River Li. It's unbelievably beautiful and much better than a huge cruise ship. We stayed there twice, in twin rooms. In one room the beds were very uncomfortable and hard but the second room had extra soft mattresses. Double check this when you check in, you could always change rooms.

stayed in flowers hostel with a group of friends for one night in our stop over in guilin.
was in a good location, short walk to the station and downtown main street - shopping, night market, etc. a little bit hard to find, as its down a side street, but felt very safe, and liked the loval culture/stmosphere. have to walk up some steep steps to get inside, so hopefully your backpack isn't too heavy - would be pretty inconvenient if you have a suitcase.
rooms are basic but clean - a/c, bed (with pillow and blanket), rubbish bin, power socket, and thats about it. bathroom was also clean, as was the toilet (asian style sqautting toilet, and take your own tissues/toilet paper just to be safe - sometimes there was none in there)
the communal area was really comfortable and had a nice relaxed atmosphere. there were computers - internet was average, pool table, couches, bar - which was also the reception, maps/brochures/etc.
staff were absolutely AMAZING! were so friendly and helpful. gave his tips on where to stay and what to do (as we were headed for yangshou). they even let us keep our bags in locked storage for the whole day free of charge (as our train didnt leave til that night and we wanted to checkout a bit of guilin during the day)

i would recommend this place to the budget traveller, and those who are happy with the basic necessities, no frills attached. the staff were great, and the amenities basic, clean and comfortable.

Nice hostel, friendly staff and really nice communal area. Room was clean, nice size. Around 15-20 mins walk from the main attractions. If you are planning to visit Yansghou, ask girls in the reception- and go for a bamboo boat! :)
Would come back.
