If I had a choice, I wouldn't have picked this hotel to begin with. My school selected the hotel and paid the overpriced price. The bottom line is that you can find a much nicer hotel in/around Guilin for the same price. I would recommend A) getting out of the city and finding a hotel in a picturesque location or B) paying a bit more for a really nice hotel (like the Lijiang Waterfall Hotel).
The first thing I noticed about the Shanshui (Mountain+Water) Hotel was that it was dark. Even the lobby was dark and depressing. The halls felt damp and smelled of mildew. And the room was below average. The beds were hard, the carpet was dirty, and the hot water took 10 minutes to arrive at our 5th floor room.
Breakfast was buffett style, and just okay. If you don't like baozi, porrige, or sticky rice, find a more international hotel (though Shanshui claims to be an 'international' hotel).
After two nights of this, I was thankful to be leaving and returning to my happy home.
