Although we very not very lucky with the weather we were even more lucky with the hostel choice! The lakeside inn has a perfect location in the city center of Guilin. Our room was very clean and equipped with everything you need (e.g. air conditioning). The staff is very helpful (e.g. they gave me a rain-cape before we left the hotel for a day trip) and speaks perfect English which is not taken for granted in China! You can book organized day trips at the hostel bar. Another service they offer: If you plan to leave Guilin by train you can contact them via email and they will organize your train tickets in advance! Great service!

After the hustle and bustle of busy Guilin, turn down a small street and calm descends. Lakeside Inn is a very small (only 3 rooms) right next to Shanhu Lake with the pagodas. lovely walk right around lake, make sure you go under the bridge and round to the South Gate. The staff are all great, and are very obliging. Really nice homely bar, where you have free wi-fi. Rooms are clean and have comfortable beds. Would recommend to budget conscious travelers.

Room Tip: We had the family room, the bathroom was great for drying out rinsed clothes!

My Chinese friend and I stayed four nights in the Lakeside Inn. We were pleased with the location, across the street from Fir Lake (two beautifully lighted pagodas) and close to the pedestrian street. Wang Cheng (Prince's City) with Solitary Beauty Rock Park and Elephant Trunk Park are within walking distance. Prince's City is a definite must but Elephant Trunk Park is not worth the admission.

The manager of Lakeside Inn helped us find lodging for our last night in Guilin because I had made a mistake in booking our reservation. He went out of his way to walk us to TongDe Holiday Inn which was okay (rating 2) for one night. It would have been impossible for me to communicate with the staff because no one spoke English at TongDe..

Back to Lakeside Inn. The small cafe/bar on the first floor is cozy with warm wood tables, satin curtains, and a computer (no charge) set up near the front widow with a view of palm trees. Our room with two single beds was on the second floor. The tiled bath had a shower on one side and a window on the other side. The modern technology door entry card impressed me for such a small establishment.

On arrival there was no hot water but the receptionist at the front desk said water interruption was due to nearby construction. We had no problem with hot water after the first day.

Clean, clean, clean! Also quiet. We knew other guests were staying upstairs by the shoes they had taken off (necessary before entering bedroom) not by them making noise.

With only three rooms, set above a pub, the Lakeside Inn at Guilin is more of a guest house or a hostel (obviously, a very small one at that) than a hotel in the real sense. Situated at the heart of the city, on the bank of the Shanhu Lake, the location is perfect for exploring the small city. The main entertainment and eating strip (Zhengyang Pedestrian St) and the Guilin Town Square are a few minutes walk away. The famous Sun and Moon Temples are on the lake just across from the inn, but cannot be seen because of the thick greenery in between. Since the inn is set on a pedestrian stretch of the Shanhu North Road, it is quiet in spite of being located beside the busy Zhongshan Road, one of the arterial roads of Guilin (the double windows also help). The décor and the other essentials in the rooms are quirky (but then, a lot of hotels in China are inclined that way), with a mattress placed on a raised platform that serves as the bed (to give a Futon look). However, they are quite comfortable, with a reasonable bathroom with good hot water supply. Bring your own toiletries though. Also, there is an electric kettle but without any tea or other offering. There is no English channel on offer either.

Although a few meters away from Zhongshan Road, the inn is not very obvious from there. Coming from the airport, a good way of locating it is to look for the huge edifice of the China Construction Bank to the right just as one crosses the bridge over the Shanhu Lake (with two lion statues flanking its raised stairway). The Inn is literally adjacent to the bank, facing the lake (look for the pub that serves as the foyer and the reception area). Alternatively, take a taxi to the well known landmark, Lijiang Waterfall Hotel (on the other side of Shanhu North Road) and walk over to the inn in three minutes.

In brief, Lakeside Inn is a no-frill but clean, safe place to stay in the heart of Guilin, with a helpful and friendly staff (students working part-time) and near transport and major facilities. It is probably more suitable for the single traveler or couples without children.

We were nervous about our trip to China and after a long flight followed by a sleeper train to Guilin from Guangzhou we were suitably exhausted and in need of a pleasant welcome. We were therefore delighted when we approached this establishment mid-morning and were greeted outside by a member of staff. We were immediately checked in and allowed access to our room where we had a much needed rest.

We were only passing through Guilin on the way to Yangshou but were so pleased to stay here as it was the warm welcome we needed and here we were able to book ourselves onto a Li River tour as our means of passage to Yangshou for the following day (even though we arrived on a Sunday).

The accommodation was wonderful - we had a huge room that was very clean and well laid out. The staff were immeasurably friendly (even when another foreign tourist was most unreasonably rude to them over the unavailability of muesli of all things!) and we enjoyed spending time in the bar area downstairs which is very comfortable.

The accommodation is very well situated - we walked with our luggage from the train station to here without problem and the area is very quiet as the street outside the establishment is pedestrianised. We were pleased to be so well situated for local amenities and great restaurants and would certainly recommend this place to anyone. Although the establishment is small, we think you get the same facilities and service as the larger western hotel chains in a much nicer setting and with a friendlier, but not intrusive, style.

The Guilin Lakeside Inn is a small boutique hotel right on the main lake in Guilin. A walkway runs in front of the hotel so there is little noise. The property only has about nine rooms and the location is wonderful. The staff are very helpful and the breakfast was good. The hotel is about a ten minute walk to the bus station for those wanting to go to Yangshou to view the karsts along the Li Jiang River. You can also take a boat from near Guilin which I had intended doing but a heavy rainfall made that impossible. There are many shops and restaurants a short walk from the inn and the inn itself does a fairly good job offering from their kitchen. Guilin is a very beautiful city and a must for those who love China. So is Yangshou which is about 83 km from Guilin.

Room Tip: My room had a view of the park and lake but I think all of their rooms are very good. No road runs...

I liked the deco in my room which made it homely and bright. The room was clean and I do not need to wear slippers around the room. However, the bathroom looked tired and in need of renovation.

The location was good too, 2 bus stop to the main bus station and 3 bus stop to the train station. There are 2 lakes right outside the inn. Within walking distance to 2 pedestrian street was good food and shops. Ask the staff for directions.

The staff was help to book the Li river cruise. He noticed that I can speak chinese and asked if I would like to join the chinese tour which was alot cheaper and still as good. The boss was friendly and had a good chat one evening.
