Shangri-La Hotel Guilin

Okay, let's get Guilin out of the way first. Not the best city in China to visit, but useful as a base for Yangshuo and beyond. If you do need to stay in the city, however, you really can't do better than the Shangri-La.

All the usual Shangri-La trimmings, but just a shame that occupancy appears to be so low.
The week we stayed here, the hotel was deserted. We got a special offer on a Horizon Room, which meant access to the Horizon Lounge. To be honest, without this option, it would have been a very quiet trip. No people in the hotel meant a very out of season atmosphere (and this was June). While this ensured a very personalised service from the great staff, and almost exclusive use if the outdoor pool for our family, at times it was verging on The Shining.

So, good points: the outdoor pool, the Chinese restaurant for dim sum, the Horizon Lounge and staff. Okay points: the atmosphere, the other food options (limited) and, sorry to say, Guilin itself.

You will be woahed by the 5-star lobby and decorations but you will be very soon disappointed by its food and drinks, especially in the Horizon Club - Just CHEAP.
Staff are very friendily, helpful and professional.

Room Tip: If you book a river-view room, make sure you ask for one with more view of the river instead of look...

Extraordinary service level and overall atmosphere for mainland China. Most of the staff speaks English and understands your needs. The Shang is like an island in Guilin where you can relax and calm down.

Room Tip: Missing a sound system.

My girlfriend organized this trip as a surprise and I must say the scenery from the hotel is amazing. Hotel itself is of good quality and rooms are comfortable and well equipped (if you like the chinese style). The hotel seriously lacks in atmosphere and the food in the Chinese restaurant and the lobby are very poor. The concierge team is nothing short from being totally incompetent. The tour that was organized was a total disaster with no information being passed to the tour guide (even the hotel umbrella had holes in it).For those who plan in a tight schedule to the airport be aware that the timing are totally wrong.
We were lucky enough to upgrade the room for and extra 240 RMB per night and got access to the business lounge. The team there is very nice and the happy hours saved us from another horrible meal.
We highlighted the issues to management and they just ignored the comments...

This is a very big, elegant hotel, with resort facilities of outdoor pools and a bar, in front of the river, with beautiful views. A very small part of it is under construction and rehabilitation, BUT! during my stay a couple of weeks ago, this was limited to a couple of the highest floors on one wing, and only visible if I went outside and looked at it. It was completely undetectable from anywhere I was in the huge hotel, from the lobby to the restaurants, to my room. I only noticed it because it was mentioned in a TA comment, so I looked for it. Its a very large luxurious hotel, and its difficult to imagine that it would be detectable or inescapable. I only mentioned it because I read a comment about it, worried slightly, and wanted to say its hard to imagine anyone being bothered about it.

If you want to take a Guilin River tour, the hotel will set it all up for you, from the mini-van to the river, to its guide on the boat down the river, to bringing you up to the hotel by mini-van from the tourist town 4-5 hours down the river, after an hour of looking around, which can be fun. Couldn't be easier, for about 550 Yuan, $100.

In good weather, the views from the hotel are about as great as from the river. I had a view facing the river. There must be rooms facing the other way. If so, I would try pretty hard to get a room with a good view across the river. I would rank it among the great hotel views of my life.

One consideration is that this hotel is not in the center of Guilin. It takes you a while to get there, and you would have to take a cab or an evening boat cruise to see the center of Guilin, which I hear is quite beautiful. But, to me the hotel is so great, it is worth it. I read that this Shangri-La is one of the "older properties." Perhaps somehow historically, but I might mind the company of anyone who had much to complain about there. I just thought it looked beautiful.

The staff were completely attentive and helpful, the greeting hostess in her costume beautiful, and though I sadly did Guilin in a one-night one-day fly by, they were completely gracious about a late afternoon in their lobby and dinner before I took a cab to my plane.

Room Tip: I only spent one night there in one room. Mine faced the river and sunset. They must have rooms wh...

Loved this hotel. Modern, beautiful & very clean.

Our room was amazing. Ceiling to floor windows overlooking the river & pool.

Huge selection on the breakfast buffet. Delicious food.

Ate in the pub one night & had a very good western pub type meal.

Our only minor negative observations: aside from the reception staff, the English of the staff wasn't great. Also, it took a very long time to get drinks in the pub & the lobby bar.

Great hotel.
