This is an older property but nice. Beautiful foyer to have cocktails with nice view of park and river. BreakFast buffet was ok, not as good as the other hotels we stayed in China. Olympic sized pool to swim in. Small workout room

I recently stayed one night at the Shangri-la with my two daughters, ages 6 and 11. The lobby is beautiful, check-in staff speaks good English, and our view of the river and mountains was nice (albeit tainted with some unattractive buildings in the foreground.) Room/bed was comfortable. My disappointment comes from: 1) the lack of universal power outlets in the room, which should be standard for a 5 star international hotel (and have existed in every hotel/inn that we've stayed at over the last 2 weeks.) 2) The shower was dirty/moldy and no shampoo/body wash was provided 3) our room service breakfast arrived COLD (including eggs and french toast). The front desk was kind to refund the charge, but this should never happen in a hotel of this level. 4) When asking the front desk about taxi/airport transportation, the staff pointed me to a "special" with the concierge for a hotel car, which was twice the price of a cab. The concierge was a bit rude when I expressed that I just wanted a taxi. Then, when hailing a taxi the next morning, the bellman put us in a tiny and cramped taxi with no A/C. Overall, the level of service should be better for a hotel charging these prices and claiming 5 star. If you want a quiet and natural setting with gorgeous views, skip Guilin and go to Yangshuo (we stayed at Li River Retreat - not luxurious, but everything a western traveler wants for less than half the price)

We stayed for six nights in a Club Horizon River Room. These rooms have beautiful views of the river and the characteristic karst mountains. Horizon rooms give access to the Horizon Club Lounge for breakfast, all day coffee, tea and soft drinks and evening cocktails with a buffet of small canapés and snacks.

Especially when the hotel has a large conference group, the downstairs breakfast restaurant can be quite busy. The Club Horizon Lounge has a good breakfast selection, the downstairs breakfast restaurant has many breakfast choices on large buffets.

The hotel is modern built with a classic Chinese style roof. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and feature a big pool, pool bar, children's playground and waterfall ponds. Every morning two female Tai Chi instructors perform this classic art on a special open air stage. Guests can join-in is the like.

Next to the outdoor pool, there is a big indoor lap pool, a very well equipped fitness centre, sauna, steam room and a beautiful spa with treatment rooms for singles and couples.

There a multiple dining options. The Chinese Shang Palace, serving delicate Chinese cuisine. The menu also offers local Guilin specialties. We had diner there twice and loved it. Li cafe is a buffet restaurant with a wide selection of Asian and Western dishes. U Bar is a pub style restaurant with a great selection of a la carte options. Al fresco dining is available at U Bar & Li Café. We tried all three restaurants and were delighted with the food, service and staff. The Lobby Lounge serves drinks and pastry, the pool bar drinks, juices, smoothies and snacks.

The hotel staff is as can be expected at a Shangri La hotel. So friendly and helpful. Many wonderful young people who take such pride in delivering the best possible service. The Head Concierge, Mr James Zhang is of world class standard. The perfect ambassador for the hotel and the brand. Organizing trips, arranging transport and excursions, sending out our postcards. Nothing was to much trouble for him.

If you are looking for a luxury base to explore the region, we can definitely recommend this hotel. The rooms ate really nice, well appointed and very comfortable. The beds are excellent and housekeeping standards very high.

Room Tip: Select a River View Horizon room. These rooms have beautiful views of the river and the characterist...

Being the only known and trustworthy international brand that is relatively new in Guilin (built in 2010), it didn't take me too long to book the Shangri-La Guilin. The other choice would be the Sheraton, more central but a lot older. All other hotels seem to be local brands which might be nice but such is still up for exploration.

The lobby is luxury and grand - I think everybody will agree on that.

Room is of generous size and clean. Traditional Chinese art decor throughout which is lovely.

Riverview room is a good option but don't expect the 'wow factor' due to the location of the hotel. So it might just do without. For spectacular river views you will have to go for the real Li River cruise. Not from any hotel rooms.

Bathroom is good sized and clean. One thing to mention is that 'unbranded' toiletries are offered and the quality of the shampoo and conditioner is rather poor - this is quite a personal opinion I would think but I hope this is helpful to other lady travellers. I kinda expect L'Occitane or similar.

Foodwise I don't tend to eat in 5 star hotels if I am travelling in mainland China - it is generally true that outside food and restaurants are much better and cheaper - something I figured out long time ago travelling mainland China.

About the location, the locals tend to think it is not 'central enough' but I don't think it is a problem at all. Guilin itself is a small town/city and the location is actually a bonus - it wouldn't be as noisy or crowded as the central ones. It gives you a sanctuary after a long day in the hustle and bustle.

Only stayed one night - but would loved to have stayed another night - we used the pool and with the heat was a real bonus - we used the free transfer service to Guilin town - this was excellent they dropped us off at 7.00 and picked us up at 9.45 and this was complimentary - we were the only ones that used it - the driver told us about the sights - really made our stay

Room Tip: Ours overlooked the pool and the river

It was nice to spend our only night in this Hotel in Guilin: old style, comfortable, with a great breakfast. Do not have time to enjoy its public spaces, pool etc.. but the room was complete with good amenities. The staff was super helpful and the experience was favourable.

Just stayed one night with my family.

Beautiful lobby and great setting.

We had 3 rooms on the 4th floor overlooking the river and outdoor pool. The rooms were pleasant enough but looked a little tired and scruffy; surprising for what seems to be a relatively
new hotel.

Avoid the dinner buffet at all costs. Hugely overpriced for what was canteen like food. Breakfast buffet was only marginally better.
