“clean and comfortable”
Reviewed 19 January 2014 via mobile

Stayed there a couple of nights in January - very obviously the off season, as we saw very few people around. The room we had doesn't appear to have been updated since it's inception and was definitely in 1980s decor. That aside, it was clean and tidy, though definitely not a 5 star even by Chinese ratings. We seemed to be the only ones for breakfast as our table was the only one set. A basic menu but sufficient. The staff were friendly even if their English language skills were a bit on the rudimentary side. WiFi was available only in the lobby. Located conveniently on the river.

Arrived late, 2 people at the desk, no one to help with our bags.
Get to the room all l want is a coffee but only black and green tea provided. Didnt bother to ring the front desk as our guide checked us in as no one spoke english.
The room well we giggled, until tears ran down our faces. The bathroom is from the sixties. The hair dryer is HUGE, l didnt know what it was until my husband told me.
The room is clean and tidy, l am still dealing with all the controls being in the bed side table. Sixties eat your heart out..
Went for breakfast only ones there, had 3 lovely wait staff serve us. Had a bit of breakdown in communication though, l asked about the french bread, didn't think l ordered it, got my omelet, fruit and coffee, nice and relaxed when the French toast l apparently ordered came out.
It was good and l was stuffed full of food.
They gave us each a bag of cookies as a gift. The staff are lovely.

Room Tip: Smoking is allowed so ask for a non smoking room.

Our room overlooked the Li River and the river walk. Great view of the river and the mountains. Although the hotel is older, the room was comfortable, clean and the service great. The breakfast buffet options were both Asian and Western with an omelet station. The hotel has wifi available in the lobby. It was within walking distance to town and the Elephanr Rock Park.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view room.

I consider several factors in choosing a hotel, then rating it afterwards. I also try and get hotels that have character or a feel for where we are, or the type of trip I am on. In other words, when in Prague, I don't want the Hilton.

Reviews by others are very important, and we do our homework. Also considered are location, price, breakfast, communication.

Comfort, lighting, bathroom space, water pressure...all things that make a stay or can ruin it.

That said, I am writing this review late as I got all of my hotels confused after 3 weeks and even taking notes.
The hotel has a great view over the river and across the river. We took a long walk several times around the neighborhood and had some wonderful cultural experiences we would have missed if we hadn't gone out. Great fun.
Per my notes, our room looked out over a roof of the lower dining room. That made it possible to hang our laundry line in the window for our handwashed clothing. :} The suction cups worked great in the window.
The dinner was OK, but BF was much better.
Beds were harder than other 'typical' hard beds on our tour but still ok. Shower was nice.
Lighting was good.
The hairdryer didn't work, so had to ask for another which wasn't much better. Iron in room.
We were part of a tour so I didn't do the typical research of other hotels in the area to compare and don't know the rates paid.
Typical of entire trip, reception for wi-fi was pretty nonexistent.
I recommend the walk around the area if you are there.
The hotel is removed from the 'touristy' nicer things across the river, but it all depends on what you are there for.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view over the river

The hotel is in a convenient location, and we enjoyed our stay here. As others stated, the beds are firmer than many like, but we found them comfortable. Wifi was available in the lobby, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Our only complaint/concern was the electrical wiring, which we found to be substandard and franklky looked dangerous.

Our Smartours trip booked this hotel on our trip in May 2013. The hotel is conveniently located and directly across from the riverwalk area where we enjoyed the locals exercising in the morning and strolling at night. The service was typical of a hotel during Mao's reign. The Wifi was free in the lobby, but the signal cut in and out and was very frustrating. Our tour had a farewell dinner in the Chinese Restaurant on the second floor. The food was disgusting, and the help must have been too lazy to fill the dishes on the lazy Susan. If you sit at a lazy Susan round table, you will be lucky to get a half a bite of a dish. Several people at our table did not even get to sample some of these dishes. If your group has a farewell dinner at this hotel, I would highly recommend you saying farewell to the included dinner and eat at a local restaurant in Guilin. Rooms were comfortable and well maintained.

My stay was booked as part of a Grand Circle Tour and was a highlight of the accommodations during the trip. The room featured the typical "key-in-the-slot" device to keep the electricity on in the room. Enjoyed the handy set of electrical controls on the bed table between the beds! Mattress was firmer than US folks will prefer, but softer than most I encountered during my 3 weeks in China. While not ultra-modern, the hotel was well kept up and clean. the location was excellent - the river was right across the street and we were able to walk downtown easily! The shopping was good too. Breakfast was well stocked, with a nice blend of local and European and US-style offerings that were nicely displayed and fresh. The free welcome drink at check was a nice touch.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view instead of a room overlooking the restaurant/atrium.
