The Titan Times was probably our favorite hotel during our Gate 1 tour of China. The spacious room had a nice size bedroom area and a separate sitting area with its own TV [not that we had time to watch anything]. Just watching the CRAZY Xi’an drivers out the window was entertainment enough. [We are talking traffic on steroids here.] We liked the staff and very much enjoyed the breakfasts here. There was a lot of selection for both Chinese and American style options, and the dishes were well presented. However, what helped make this hotel a standout from our point of view was the location.
If you exited the hotel and turned away from the city wall [left, I think] and crossed the first 2 streets [Please make sure you wait and cross with some Chinese people. Traffic here is not like in the states.] then turn left and walk a few blocks, you will come to a large supermarket on the right. This was very interesting. Not only did this store sell lots of the usual foods, snacks etc, [I bought a variety of small individual snacks by weight so you can try a wide selection of items] they also sold clothing and shoes very inexpensively.
If you exit the hotel and turn toward the old city wall, walk about 100 ft and cross the street on your right [again- wait to cross with some Chinese people]. Continue walking about 2 blocks and just past the moat you get to the wall. You can enter the old city here [at W 5th Rd.], but it is way more interesting to turn right and walk past the little tea house and into the park that follows the outside of the wall. You will see people engaged in many different activities. If you walk about 10 minutes through this park you will get to the West Gate. IF you want to walk on the wall itself, which is considered a park unto itself, access is at the West Gate. It can be tricky to get to the admissions area, as it is located in the middle of the traffic at the Gate. The cost is 56 rmb per person, which we all thought was worth it. If you keep walking into the old city on West ST. from the West gate, you will eventually come to the Bell Tower. We did this both nights we stayed in Xi’an, we enjoyed it so much. Behind the Bell tower, all the way to W 5th Rd, there is an extensive fascinating night market. There was lots of street food [which was interesting to see, but we did not eat any] and what seemed like unending shops. One friend who came with us bought a set of terracotta warriors for what she thought was an excellent price after only a bit of haggling. Just wander where you find what interests you, and you won’t be disappointed.
Have fun in Xi’an!
