It sounds odd, but you have to visit Xian to find some of the best macaroons on the planet--made by a French Chef with a secret recipe at this hotel. These delights are certainly the highlight of the otherwise dull executive lounge and they sell them near the lobby. But you probably want to know about more than macaroons. We arrived at the airport and the taxi ride to the hotel was an ordeal. Our driver looked like a troll and was intent on cheating us. Did not know where the hotel was located (we learned it was his first trip to the airport--just like us!) Fortunately, he needed fuel for the taxi and we escaped into another cab when he stopped for gas near the airport! Unless you or your spouse is Chinese (or in our case "Chinese, Taipei") and capable of having a huge screaming fight with the taxi driver, you might want to consider shelling out the extra money to get Hilton to pick you up. The taxi issue continued to pop up throughout our stay as they sometimes did not want to use the meter (of course, the pedicabs have no meter) and you needed to bargain. As noted in other reviews, the hotel lobby is very impressive. The hotel rooms clean and well appointed. Some of the staff (especially Herry) is very helpful. I had a good chat with him about Chairman Mao. On our second night, we were upgraded to a very nice suite. This is VERY unusual for Hilton which is extremely stingy with perks for gold level guests (or anyone else for that matter). Perhaps the prospect of a new Marriott coming to town has got them thinking? The pool was out of service and they offered to let us use one at another property. Breakfast was fine if you opted to take breakfast downstairs and not at the executive lounge (they give you the choice). Could not check out from the lounge as the staff had no clue as to how to check people out. Just go downstairs to check out. Or to have breakfast. All things considered, this was better than your average Hilton experience.
