“Small collection but wonderful guide”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

The guides at the museum are very knowledgable. Although small there is a good variety of artworks. The idea of giving a short calligraphy lesson to visitors at the end of the tour was a real highlight. You can also buy any of the works of arts by the students. The guide are not pushy at all. I was really interested in one of the paintings. However, I was not confident enough or had sufficient knowledge of the artist to make the decision on the spot. Unfortunately, not much artist information is available on google, only in mandarin on baidu. Perhaps, they can consider providing more information on the contemporary pieces that are for sale and the artists behind them

“Felt like group tourists trap”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Decided to have a look at this museum after browsed Tripadvisor, but we have been refused to enter because we were not part of any tourist group—even we were willing to pay.

It’s at middle of nowhere; it was long way to get there. This museum looked spooky as well, not our lost for not being able to visit.

“A fascinating review of folk art in Shaanxi province”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

There isn't anything I didn't like about this museum. Few tourists drop by but the curator does a great job of covering folk art in Shaanxi province. Shadow puppetry, painting, paper cutting, and mask making were just a few crafts the curator discussed.

“Nice small museum”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

The museum is small, but the visit with the guide (free, available both in English and Chinese) is quite good and fun!

It's free if you're a student, otherwise it would cost you 30 yuan.

“Hands On Museum”
Reviewed 9 May 2014

This museum is not on the regular tourist route in Xi'an but well worth considering. Good for adults and young people. The primary focus is folk art, but visitors can also learn about China's outstanding tradition of painting, even though the examples of famous paintings are reproductions.
The English speaking guide we had (Lei Li, I believe her name was) was excellent. She has been with the museum 7-8 years and knows how to engage her audience. She is also trained in Chinese art history.
The tour concludes with a 20-minute hands-on introduction to Chinese calligraphy. Adults and children are taught basic brush strokes and then shown how they relate to Chinese painting. Visitors also get a quick overview about the evolution of Chinese characters. This was a great hit with my family.
This museum charges no entrance fee. It earns income by selling paintings of various prices. There is no high pressure sales. If a visitor chooses not to purchase anything, I recommend that they leave a donation to the museum.
