Grand Metropark Hotel Xi'an

I am surprised to see the other reviews about "needs refurbishment". When I stayed there last week on the 10th floor, the room was as good and fresh as any top notch hotel. Down duvet covers, down pillows, clean and new bathroom and furniture. I must have been in a newly redone room, but it matched the clean public areas and attentive staff. So, I have trouble imaging any areas that needed refurbishment. In fact, this hotel was the best of all we stayed in on our recent trip to China. The location is great - inside the city wall but near the eastern gate, where it's easy to pop out to the grassy moat/park area right outside in the morning to join the locals in their walking and exercise. 20 minute nice stroll into the center square (not a square, but a cross roads with a historic Bell Tower in the center and two Starbucks and grocery/shops all around). Safe, easy to catch a 1 yuan bus (about 15 cents) if you don't feel like doing the walk.

I also have a soft spot for the buffet restaurant and lunch here. 5 years ago I came to Xi'an on a 2 week volunteer vacation teaching English, and when we periodically needed a break from the Chinese food at the volunteer house, we came here (when it was still a Hyatt, but the food appeared the same) for the best banquet including real French bread and good western cheeses (hard to find these two things anywhere in China). I loved staying here.

This hotel had the best of three executive floor offerings on our trip through China.
Large lounge with great food and drink in the evenings for free. Large room. Great Service. Overall the hotel is need of refurbishing but still it was very pleasant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the executive floor.

Our group booked our stay while the place still was a Hyatt, and I understand why it is not one any longer. The entire place desperately needs refurbishment, with everything old and worn out in the rooms. The front desk wanted to retain our passports overnight when our group checked in; no way I would agree to that!

On the positive side, our room was quiet, the shoji screens on the windows did a great job blocking the outside light and sounds, the linens were excellent, and the duvet just the right thickness, unlike the too heavy ones I experienced at other five-star hotels we stayed at during our trip to China.

This used to be the Hyatt Hotel in X'Ian, but Hyatt dropped its management on 30Jun11. The atrium and common areas are well-designed, and are kept pretty clean. However, the rooms need major renovations...mattresses are hard; our safe didn't work; lights not working; etc. We ate in the restaurant, but few people spoke English in the public areas.

Room Tip: Since you are within the city wall and it is somewhat noisy, try to get a higher floor. Location wi...

We stayed here as part of a tour group starting Sept 21 for 2 nights. The floor in our room was dirty and stained. Air conditioning did not work properly and beds were nowhere Hyatt standard which was the name when booked. I filled out an evaluation and left it at the front desk with email address abd request for a reply. None has been forthcoming. This hotel is only 5 star in its own mind and does not meet the stabdard of others we stayed at in China. I suggest you save your money and go somewhere else.

On our classic China tour (Beijing-Xian-Guilin-Shanghai), this hotel was on our tour schedule before it left its Hyatt name... now I understand why.
Rooms are clean but old dated, and who ever heard of a 5 stars hotel with a shower curtain!
We,re upgraded to a Club room, with the most awful view (old and dirty alley). Mercifully, our stay in Xian lasted just 2 days, and there were so many lovely things to see that room was just to sleep.
Don,t miss Xian on your China trip, and don,t miss the magnificent Wild Goose Pagoda. Just do stay somewhere else...

The Grand Metropark used to be a Hyatt Regency hotel, until recently about July 2011. (Our travel agent referred to it as the Hyatt Xian). My understanding of this is because the hotel owners refused to renovate the rooms to be more modern. I agree with Hyatt on this one, as the rooms are in pretty bad need of renovation. That's not to say they haven't been well maintained, as they have, but everything in the room just looks, feels, and smells like its from the early 1990s, and after 20 years the age really shows. Otherwise, the rooms were exactly what you'd expect of a Hyatt.

The Hotel is located in a decent area inside the walls of the city, and there are a few shops right outside, include some convenience stores around the back. The convenience stores were important to my wife and me, because unlike most hotels in China, this one did not give any free water bottles and we arrived in the city late. The front desk directed us to them, and even after dark there were a lot of people around.

The hotel did not have a pool, but did have a decent exercise room, with a standard array of treadmill, elliptical (although broken), and bikes. There was in-room internet, but it costs 2rmb/min to a max of 120 rmb/day. I've heard free wireless could be obtained on the 9th floor lounge, but I didn't try.

The breakfast was a good spread of western and eastern styles in a buffet, and there was no shortage of food. We had to leave early on our last day (prior to the opening of the buffet), but the hotel agreed the night before to get us some breakfast to go for free in the morning. The staff were always very nice, and they gave us free moon cakes with the holiday.

The hotel did cash traveler's checks, but their rates did not seem to be very good after their commission.

Room Tip: The 9th floor has a private lounge.
