“Cheap, clean, but less than perfect service attitude”
Reviewed 5 May 2009

Rooms were typical Ibis - simple, minimally furnished - but were clean and pleasant, no strange smells that one can expect from a locally managed budget hotel. Given the price we paid (RMB130 per room per night), we thought it was quite a bargain. Location is quite off from the city center, although pretty close to one stretch of the citywall. We walked, anyway, to and from the city center mostly, since that is the best way to see more of the place, and we managed it in about 45mins to an hour. Service attitude, though, was not desirable, but we thought we can't complain too much since it was cheap. Breakfast too was, accordingly to me (Singaporean) and my in-laws' (Swedish) tastes, far from delectable. However, given again that it costs only RMB15, the spread was reasonable.

Stayed here with our three kids (7, 5 and 3 years old). It was great for us as we were not going to be spending any time in the hotel anyway and just needed a place to keep our stuff and shower/sleep. AMAZING value - just so cheap! The staff were very accomodating and very pleasant. We also used the travel place in the lobby which was more expensive than getting someone off the street but reliable and convenient.
Plus points:
Clean, got everything you need (even a small kettle), great location (walk to the city wall from here - the East Gate, don't bother doing what we did and go to South gate by taxi - much nicer to walk there along the wall), nice people, good shower, very clean bathroom (kids loved the 'airplane' bathroom - very compact!).
Super cheap.
Minus points. No interconnecting rooms (but they bent over backwards to get us two next to each other and gave us a three-bed for the price of a two-bed). Thin walls - very noisy - take earplugs. Horrific breakfast buffet - just don't do it - it may cost £1 but you get what you pay for! Super ughh and very poor quality ingredients. Take a short walk or very cheap taxi to Starbucks if you crave a western-style start to the day. The whole foyer is like a smokers den - reeks and is full of smoke all day (which didn't make breakfast any nicer) - foul if you don't smoke (I'm sure its lovely if you do!).

We went out to dinner each night - all the big hotels do a massive buffet which will leave you groaning. About £10 for all you can eat and a beer/soft drink - younger kids eat free.
We tried the Sofitel - snotty unfriendly service (they should take some tips from the lowly Ibis and get their heads out from wherever they have put them - somewhere dark) but great food - really good quality ingredients, amazing variety and beautifully presented (I do like my food to look pretty!). We had to ask to find out about the beer etc and the attitude was frankly depressing - not one member of staff anywhere greeted us or smiled - such a shame as it looks pretty swanky. We then tried the slightly shabby Hilton - same lousy service but not such good food so we went back to the Sofitel the next night (the kids loved the fresh noodles).

Nice, clean, well maintained budget hotel, with decent, clean, well maintained and for the price, roomy rooms. Very reasonable price, $23/night. Staff tried but due to lack of training and language ability not very helpful

This was our best value hotel during 2.5 weeks in China. Rate worked out to $23 U.S. per night. Staff was helpful, spoke English and kept the rooms and the lobby spic and span. The lobby was a relaxing place to go for a beer, tea etc. with nice tables and free wi-fi. This is a good location in a busy area, but a Chinese area, not a tourist area. It's two blocks from an entrance to the wall where you can bike ride or walk, and on several major bus lines. We took the buses everywhere including to and from the train station. Check out the lady around the corner in the alley who sells her homemade dumplings in the later afternoons. I'd stay here again. Why pay more?

Being a standard Ibis, what you see is what you get. The staff were friendly, but check-in and check-out took more time than we thought was necessary. The manager at reception, Simon, spoke excellent English and was super friendly and helpful.

The non-smoking room was clean, functional and well maintained, with the TV being somewhat complicated to operate (there are two devices, one presumably being the satellite decoder and the other one being the TV itself - we didn’t figure out how to get a signal, but then again we spent most time away from the hotel anyway).

The breakfast was very Chinese orientated and so for 15 RMB we thought that for a Chinese guest, that would be value for money. We opted not to have it though and dined out each day.

The location of the Ibis is very convenient with regards to a walk or bicycle ride on the City Wall - a definite must-do. It takes just 5 minutes by foot to the nearest gate of the City Wall (HePing Men 和平们) and from there it is a peaceful 3 - 3.5h walk around the magnificently restored wall. Also it is located on the street that leads directly to bus station where you can take the bus 306 to the Terra-cotta Warriors.

We didn't have much trouble with taxi drivers as I speak a little Chinese and always had a map of the city at hand which helped alot. We took the 306 bus to see the Terra-cotta Warriors and were pleased with the ride there and back also (7 RMB each way, great price!)

I had never stayed in Ibis, but the expectation was that it was clean but no frills. Well, it was definitely no frills. But the first room we had was not clean at all. It was on the non-smoking floor, yet the room wreaked of smoke and you can't open the window either. The ventilation wasn't working either leaving the room very hot at night. We complained and they said they would send someone to check it out but no one ever came. I woke up in the middle of the night finding it hard to sleep because the room had a really bad odor and it was hot. The next day, we requested to switch rooms. They said it would be ready in the afternoon... when we came back in the evening, the front desk had no idea what was happening. We had to explain yet again that the room wreaked of smoke and the A/C didn't work. Finally they got us a new room. After the switch the sleep was a lot better.

The free wireless is nice in the lobby, but again, if you don't smoke it smells really bad. The lobby is kind of small so the smoke just sits in the air.

The buffet breakfast is basic. Not a great selection but for 15 RMB you can't go wrong.

Overall, I would have given the hotel a better score on cleanliness had we gotten a better room to begin with. Without that experience it would have been a lot better, but it was cheap and a place to crash for a couple nights.

I'll reiterate what was previously posted - great value for the money! ...We stayed one night arriving from Beijing on the overnight train. I mistakenly made our hotel reservation for the night that we spent on the train . The hotel simply adjusted our reservation - no charge, no fuss!. That's great customer service...The hotel breakfast, although cheap, did not appeal to us. We opted for the Hyatt buffet breakfast just down the block. It was expensive, but well worth it as we were craving western food at that point...Outside the hotel, were two little fruit stands. Convenient to pick up snacks....The travel agency in the hotel arranged car service to take us to the airport. They charged 150 rmb. Since we were 4 people with 4 bags of luggage, we consistently throughout China, had problems with taxis agreeing to take us. This service was hassle free and much appreciated! ...Xian was a day and a half visit for us. Hotel Ibis fit the bill.
