“Nice hotel, bad location for tourism”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2012

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights July 14-15-16, 2012. It was not a bad hotel, but if you have any desire to walk out of the hotel and be able to go to restaurants or bars, then the location is not appropriate. It woul drequire a minimum 25 minute taxi drive to get anywhere like that in Xi'an.

Some notes on the stay...

LOBBY
The lobby is goregous and spacious as with most Asian hotels, this is where they put the focus.

ROOM
The room is OK... nothing special and not a five star hotel quality...and looks a bit old, but it is clean and adequate.

ROOM SERVICE
Room service was prompt and the food was OK - again nothing special, but certainly adequate.

STAFF
The staff could all speak English and were very helpful and friendly.Their service level was good and on par with other Shangri-La hotels I have stayed in China.

CONCIERGE
Really very helpful in booking travel to the Terracotta warriors and Mount Hua in advance of the trip - gave us advice and pricing. Make sure you haggle with them as they will reduce the price they quote which is certainly higher than other hotels that arrange this.

BREAKFAST BUFFET
They do have a very wide selection, but the quality was not that great. Again, it was adequate but not five star level. Both the tea and coffee were extremely light... like drinking hot water.

POOL
Looks nice, but it would be better as an outdoor pool. It is quite shallow, but good for swimming laps as it was pretty empty when I went.

GYM
Mostly machines - not much free weights... they also have a ping pong table since that is considered a sport in China.

LOCATION
As noted above, there is not much around the hotel. There is a Portuguese restuarant in the bulding just to the right of the hotel (facing the hotel) which was pretty good. And in the same building is a massage place called Sun-Moon Lake Massage which was also good and about 1/4 the price of the SPA in the Shangri-La Hotel. Actually the Shangri-La staff recommended it to me when I asked the price of the SPA in the hotel. Other than that there is really nothing around the hotel... so if this is just your place to crash, it is OK, but if you expect to walk out of the hotel and have a lot to do, you will be disappointed. Keep that in mind.

OVERALL
A nice hotel... a bit pricey, but good place to rest.. an oasis of calm within the noise and clutter of China... but not in a good location for tourists.

I spent three days with my two children (8 and 10) at the Shangri-la in December 2011.
The hotel was amazing. We had an absolute ball, the staff were so freindly and the food was awesome. We really enjoyed our stay here and our visit to the Terracotta Warriors was a highlight of our China adventure...

Our rooms and room service was particularily good as was the heated indoor pool
The kids summed it up best, as they said they felt like royalty when staying at the shangri-la :-)
stay here if you can...

We had a large group of family staying at the hotel and the hotel was extremely accommodating. The rooms are nice, clean, and quiet. The pool and locker rooms are nice. Staff are friendly. Breakfast buffet had everything including a chocolate fountain.

We had a nice experience with the Shangri-La in Xi'an. Check-in was flawless and the rooms are clean, quiet, and have good air conditioning! The bathroom is great, with nice toiletries. The lobby, as others have mentioned, is gorgeous. However, there were a couple of large tour groups arriving while we were there, so it was nothing short of bustling.

We had one meal at the hotel (late lunch) and then flew out of Xi'an very early the next morning. My group thought their lunch was delicious.

The hotel is NOT close to the old town, or to other tourist areas. If you aren't familiar with Xi'an, it is a large city with major traffic. Traffic in the hotel area seems to be very congested between 4-7:30pm (careful crossing the street around here!), and our tour driver wanted to be well out of the area by 4:00pm.

We walked in the early evening, and visited 2 close shopping areas. One was a large,Target-type store, and the other was a small mall. Neither were worth the walk in the heat. One member of our group took the bus to the the old wall, said it was impressive, and enjoyed it.

I gave this hotel one less "star" rating because of the location. If you're looking for a nice, clean hotel in Xi'an, and proximity to tourist areas doesn't matter, then this is a great hotel. If you are looking to spend time in old town, the Wall, etc....then this location just may not be worth the extra drive-time.

The hotel was crammed with smoking businessmen there for some conference with what appeared to be a very important dignitary (judging by the limos and police the following day) so it wasn't a brilliant first impression but this IS China. The space was air conditioned and we chose to stay in the atrium area and take tea with all the business people! And this is where we were made to feel very important because the staff clocked our 'White faces' and busied around making the environment comfortable, finding us a suitable place to sit and removing ash trays. A couple of gents joined us uninvited and tried to take our tea and despite the fact that we were in a crowded smog the staff picked up on it immediately and asked them to move on. Very attentive and clearly understanding of cultural differences and accommodating them which is a rarity. The crowds disappeared the next day and peace (and clean air) was restored. We had a very enjoyable stay. And if you need a good start to the day you cannot beat a Shangri La breakfast!

Shangri-La hotel in Xian is the most expensive hotel (per prices listed on hotels.com) in Xian, China. Xian is most famous for Terracotta Warriors museum and Big Wild Goose Pagoda etc. I visited Xian at the end of June 2012 and the temperature was hot (38 C).

Sangri-La hotel is very comfortable and the people are very friendly and helpful. It has all the facilities including free Wi-Fi. However, this hotel does not allow shuttle service from the airport. Therefore, the only way to get to the hotel is either to take a taxi (150 to 180 RMB) or reserve the hotel car which could cost 200 to 400 RMB. In addition, it does not allow public tourist companies to serve its customers. Therefore, the only way to visit the sites listed above is either to take a taxi or reserve the hotel car as well as arrange for a tourist guide. Both could cost as much as 600 to 1300 RMB for a single tourist.

The hotel is located in a nice area but not near any general shopping mall. Therefore, one has to take a taxi to visit big shopping malls. Even though taxis are reasonably priced, but it is an inconvenience.

Information that might help travelers is how to book a hotel using hotels.com. Since I already know the hotel I want to stay in, I use hotels.com for many of my hotel reservations. When I checked hotels.com using a foreign IP, hotels.com showed a very high price for most hotels. However, when I used an American IP, I got much lower prices for the same hotels. An American should check the prices via domestic IP and could end up saving hundreds of dollars.

Room Tip: The hotel is located in an area where there is no noise. However, I think all sides except the north...

I would rate the Shangri-La in Xi'an as "good". Perhaps I was spoiled by wonderful experiences at the Shangri-La properties in Hong Kong and Guilin.
The hotel is on an extremely busy street in a somewhat uninteresting area of Xi'an. The location made me want to just stay in the hotel after we finished our daily touring.

The property itself was fine. The rooms were typical hotel rooms; nothing special.
As is typical of Shangri-La hotels, the staff were were friendly and efficient, and the hotel had a very nice gym and pool.

I think if I made a return trip to Xi'an, I would opt to stay in the walled part of the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the entrance. The view from the other side of the building was pretty ugly.
