Shangri-La Hotel,Xian

As I was born in this city, specifically in the area where this hotel is located, so I maybe very biased writing this review.

I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights for Xmas & New Year holiday. It's relatively new compared with other 4& 5 star hotels in Xian. It's located in the bustling business spot-Xian Hi-Tech park which is the most modern district in this ancient town.

The hotel can be categorized as luxurious type, spacious room with upscale decor. I enjoyed the hotel swimming pool and jacuzzi. The experience with hotel restaurant is good, reasonaly priced for its standards.

Across the street, two big shopping malls with Starbucks (free internet) & Pizza Hut (America's Pizza Hut Not in American fast-food style). You can also find plenty local restaurants within walking distance.

As for location from a tourist perspective, given cheap taxi rate in Xian and major attractions spreading across the city, I don't think it will be of serious concern.

I don't like the fact that guests were allowed to smoke in the hotel lobby, of course, I probably should not expect "smoke-free policy" in the first place.

The hotel was fine, just avoid the buffet. Everyone in the group was sick the next day.

This hotel is just a beautiful hotel. Really lavish, rich, and luxurious. It is a pretty amazing hotel. The breakfast is also over-the-top. Surprisingly, it is good, but it's not great. Lots of smoke & mirros with the breakfast display, but it came out as a very solid meal. The breakfast was not over-the-top with great food, unfortunately. The rooms are all phenomenal, no question. I cannot comment on the location as others have because we were part of a tour group, so we got shuttled everywhere. Location was not so critical for us. But with regards to the hotel itself, it was pretty amazing.

Good 5 star hotel, big room and nice service. However, it is far from the center of the town (aprox 20 minutes by taxi, but taxies are cheap in China - I paid arround 5-6 USD to go the the center).

If you are a turist and want to visit xian I recommand to chose one closer to the center if you are staying longer. I stayed only for 2 days, one visiting xian and one visiting the terracota warriors (which is outside xian anyway), so I had to take a taxi only once.

Stayed here over a long weekend for a short sight-seeing trip. After reading prior Tripadvisor reviews, we were initially concerned about the location being far away from the main sight-seeing district, but in the end we were very happy with our choice. The hotel is a bit inconvenient in the sense that you have to take a 20-25 minute car ride to reach the Xian City Wall area where the main city sights are located (Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower, and Drum Tower), but after spending a day in that area, which is very crowded and quite touristy, it was nice to come back to the business district which is more quiet and calm. The Shang hotel is in the newer part of Xian where the new condos, shopping malls, and broad boulevards are coming up. There are good restaurants in the area so you don't need to travel back to the City Wall area for dinner. We found the Shaanxi restaurant the hotel recommended, Tong Sheng Xiang (5 min walk from the hotel), to be better than the famous ones downtown (Xian FanZhuang and LaoSunJia). Also, there is a great spa just next door to the hotel.

When we arrived at the Shangri-la after a rather brutal travel day, we literally sighed with relief when we entered the opulent doorway. Our rooms were also spotless, and the bathrooms were luxurious. We couldn't complain about one thing, and would stay there again. Our only caution: this is a very new hotel, and it doesn't look like it's made of the type of materials that will stand the test of time. The laminated woodwork, for example, looks great now, but will not hold up to scuffs and dents. The carpeting already looks a little tired (thought clean), the shower leaked, just a little. It was great to enjoy it in its new state, but I wonder how it will look in 5-10 years?
