“Nice location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2014

The hostel is huge, this justify the confusion you can find sometimes at the reception.
Staff is english speaking and helpfull, they can also book bus tickets with a minimum surcharge.
In the period we have been it was really hot, and the lack of AC in the inner zone was terrible, above all for who was working at the reception.
The location is wonderfull, in the real center of kunming, and the roof terrace is simply unforgettable.

Excellent location with poor staff.

Chose this hostel because of its high rank on trip advisor, but one night stay there proved that I have made a wrong choice.

Cons:

- Location is excellent, with easy access to almost everything, a big supermarket, many local restaurants etc.

Pros:

- Insufficient hot water supply. Water got cold after about only 10 minutes in the shower, staff came but there was nothing he could do. He just asked us to wait, for how long, he didn't know. So we stood there covered in foams and shaking in the winter cold for about 5 minutes, but still nothing happened.

- Compared to the facilities, staff there were much more disappointing. Upon arrival, I asked a receptionist whether there is a dorm bed available. She lifted her eyes from her computer screen, drily replied "no" then quickly fixed her eyes back to the computer, without offering any further help or asking whether I want any other kind of room. Luckily, the boy sitting next to her was much nicer. He checked in the computer and found that they actually have a dorm bed available. After I settled in, I asked the same receptionist for wifi password, she still was concentrating on her computer and when hearing my question flung her arm toward somewhere and coldly said "There", then she quickly immersed herself back into the computer which apparently has something more interesting going on than some random customer asking stupid questions. When I checked out on the 2nd day, I asked a different receptionist for directions. Well, she did give me the answer which I appreciated but when she was speaking she never looked at me and kept staring at the computer screen. I am not a demanding or difficult customer, but I don't think I'm asking too much to expect people working in a hostel to smile at or at least look at their customer when talking.

The location is the best - the very city center yet it is not too noisy.
The place has a cafe, dorm rooms and double rooms. Wi Fi and TV available in a cafe. And the food is good too, by the way.
I stayed in a dorm room - mixed women and men which seemed weird when I thought about it but actually turned out good. My roommates were nice and quiet.
Every room has locker boxes where you can put your stuff and close it with your individual key which is a very good idea.
Also if you want to meet really cool people, mostly backpackers and avid travelers - do stay in this place!

I hope you like cigarettes! Try and book a whole room so you can have some refuge from smoking - unless you smoke, then, fill your boots! Smoke while you eat, sleep, go to the toilet, wash AND (hang) dry your clothes... whenever!

Try and book a whole room so you can escape the unreal noise level that this place receives. The bar itself is quite cosy and not at all loud. However, the other patrons seem to have their volume level turned up when it comes to sleepy time or when entering / exiting their rooms. That and the neighbouring shops seem to open and close at different, strange times every night. The paper thin construction ensures you will think there's a hurricane raging over your head every 30 minutes or so.

The internet is intermittent at best.

Negatives aside, seems to be a pretty popular place even for locals or otherwise guests who aren't staying at the hostel. Strange that the bar patrons and hostel guests all share one bathroom, but hey - you'll meet some friendly people here!

Staff are incredibly friendly, bending over backward to help out whenever called upon. You'll undoubtedly meet some like minded individuals at some point during your stay, conveniently, there's a billiards table, bar, and roof-top patio at your disposal.

Room Tip: For solo travellers, stretch your budget and get the double for 100 CNY. That way you may get at lea...

We booked a private room with share bathroom. Share bathroom & toilet are very clean. I saw their staffs are cleaning bathrooms & walkway the time.

Their staffs are helpful; I asked them about information of train to Dali & bus number to train station. WI-FI is free but signal was so poor

Their location is so close to Shopping Center, very easy to buy or find something to eat.

Located in the city center, The Hump is the most popular destination for backpackers in Kunming. A traditional Bird & Flower market, banks, shopping malls, super markets and pubs are all within walking distance. A convenient city bus system supports your sightseeing in this beautiful city. Start your day in our spacious common room. In this common room, we have a bar, restaurant, satellite TV and a DVD player, so you can order drinks and food, or just enjoy music or a movie while taking a break. We also have the coolest roof garden in Kunming for travelers, including a pool table, table tennis, table soccer, a reading area with bean bags, and plenty of room to just chill out and soak up the sun. In the weekend, often wild parties drive people crazy and some travelers will share their musical talent with others. Once you step into The Hump, hustle and bustle is left behind because of the open, casual, and rich cultural atmosphere. Overlooking from The Hump's roof garden, you will see ancient twin towers and gates around Jinmabiji Square. The area is very busy. In the morning, local residents practice Tai Chi; in the afternoon, you can join in a music show and win a prize. If you stay longer, you can look around the weekend outdoor market and have some fun! Kunming International Airport is about 25km from The Hump, and the train station is about 3km. There are many buses going these terminals regularly. Ticket reservation and information about travelling in Yunnan province is available at our reception. Our friendly staff is eager to help you whenever you need. ... more   less
