“Lovely boutique hotel a short walk from the lake”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2009

The biggest attraction in Hangzhou is the picture perfect West Lake, and the Crystal Orange Hotel is ideally situated to make the most of the lake's sights and activities. A five minute stroll from the lake, the Crystal Orange is a trendy boutique style hotel with very reasonable prices.
A superior twin room cost only $80 Aus, and included breakfast. Okay, the breakfast was really ordinary and more suited to Asian travellers, but we made do with the fresh fruit and coffee that was offered.
The room was comfy with modern brown and white decor, the beds and linen of good quality, and the marble bathroom had one of the best showers I've ever had in a hotel.
Complimentary water and green tea were provided in the room, along with a small chocolate on the pillows.
The staff were efficient and attentive, and wouldn't take a tip for bringing the luggage to our room. Requests were dealt with promptly, and we had the feeling that nothing would be too much trouble.
Free wifi internet is available in the lobby, and you can help yourself to fresh apples and orange sweets at the reception desk.
Although the restaurant serves only breakfast, there are numerous restaurants around the corner and along the lake road. There are also several good coffee shops further along the lake road.
The lake itself is ideal for a few days' exploring. You can boat, sail or walk around it, and there are museums, temples and gardens aplenty. Early morning sees many groups of locals practising Tai Chi and martial arts. It's worth getting up early to experience this.
This is a truly beautiful spot, and the Crystal Orange is the ideal spot to enjoy it. Far better than the overpriced Hyatt hotel a few kilometres down the road.

This hotel is an excellent find! Good price, good location, good service. Location is great, walking distance to the night market/bazzar, so no worries about lack of taxis. Local fruit stalls etc nearby selling fruits at local prices.

Service at hotel is excellent. Air-conditioning in my room was not working well. After several failed attempts to adjust, hotel staff managed to get another room for me to switch too.

Hotel room is big, spacious and modern (with flat screen TV). Toilet is modern and trendy. Prize differs with window and without. If you are not planning on staying much in the room, then either is fine. Window is quite pretty, shaped in an arch, so not your regular rectangle.

Breakfast is simple but good enough for me. If you expecting an international spread, then you will be disappointed. The usual eggs and toast, coffee/tea are available.

Hotel is pretty new, so you may not find this on some other travel sites. Rest assure this is an execellent choice. Go for it!

we stayed overnight in the hotel.

our room at the 5th floor (not accessible by lift) is vey small (especially the bathroom) and amenities are minimal but relevant. we book the deluxe room with thebalcony that face the lake. well, it does face the lake but the trees covered the view!! so no point in paying more for a balcony view. pls see attached pix for what i mean. we took a peak at the superior rooms & we felt that would have been better value.
its much bigger than the deluxe room we had, including the bathroom. when we ask the front desk, they said its because we had the balcony so we had to pay more for it (the balcony)!

the staff are very nice and service is good. we had free internet and it was working well.

breakfast is rudimentary. its within walking distance to the West lake but note that west lake is gigantic so its only part of the section.

My husband and I have been teaching and travelling around China for the past 3 years. This hotel is a real 'Gem'. The rooms are updated, clean and the staff is proficient. Above all is the location. Across the street is The West Lake and we were within a short taxi ride to most places of interest. We have stayed in many 5 Stars...the lobby's are magnificient...terry cloth robes an added plus. But we spend no time in the Lobby and even less in a robe. At the crystal orange we got a chocolate on the pillow and a room mate. A Gold Fish (symbol of good fortune)!!!. The decor is classic and the floors/ bath immaculate. Breakfast is basic...but we are coffee, juice and fruit eaters so it was sufficient. We checked out other hotels in this price range but they did not come close to 'The Crystal Orange Hotel'. In the evening we never heard a sound...the king size bed was glorious and never waited more than a minute for the elevator. Before going to Hangzhou I researched what was of interest for us and printed the pages off. In the morning we would go to the front desk and they would write the instructions for the taxi on the page. We would give the page to one of the boys at the front door and he would get us a taxi...give him directions and we were on our way. When we retuned at the end of the day we would hand the taxi driver the hotels business card (map on the back) and head home. We never found a really great place to eat but we did find a really bad one. The Friendship Hotel offers a buffet on the top floor. (I had printed off a review saying this was a must.)...The price went from 98 rmb to 168rmb each!!! But they advertised filet of beef so we went for it. Big mistake!!! One of the highlights was the area for shopping for silk and the Silk Museum that explained the process. I suggest you walk the strip first than go back and buy. Crystal Orange Hotel...we will be back...Thanks!!!!

Hi! This hotel is really quite cute! Location is good, rooms are clean and it also has a little bit of character. I am used to business hotels / serviced apartments and the room was up to that standard and also felt a bit funky. I was disappointed by the reception staff's poor English when trying to arrange for a bike- very frustrating! However, it is easy to hire a bike by the lake, so I wouldn't even bother trying to get one of the 5 hotel bikes. Anyway- you will like this place! I paid 420 RMB for the cheapest room, by calling the hotel directly. It was definitely good value.

I agreed with all the other reviewers about the location and value, but I didn't enjoy the same experience. The room prices seem to have gone up since I paid $90 USD for what they claimed to be a deluxe suite. The room did have extra space for a sofa and coffee table, but can hardly be called a suite. The bathroom had only a shower and
the space between the sliding door, sink and toilet was about 4 feet by 4 feet. When my
wife was brushing up at the sink, she had to move out of the bathroom so that I could swing out the shower door to exit. Breakfast was free with our room but it was very simple (congee with preserved turnips, eggs over easy, steam buns and something they call a ham sandwich). We stayed in room 8422 which overlooks the lobby and
is under the stairway to the 5th floor (the elevator only goes to the 4th floor). Depending on the type of guest that will be assigned to the 5th floor, the noise of people running up and down the stairs can be annoying. According to our Hangzhou guide the hotel is fairly new, having opened in mid 2008. The lobby is very impressive with the Andy Wharhol posters of Marilyn Monroe and the glass enclosed elevator. The reason I rated
the cleanliness and service as average is: 1. The hotel provides free slippers and they will be needed if you don't want to see the bottom of your feet or socks turn black from the
dust on the floor. The floors are dark laminates so you can't see the dust and also give an appearance of being clean. 2. The AC unit in room 8422 runs, but does not expell cold air. We politely asked the front desk to look into the problem twice, but nothing changed.

I also don't know why it's referred to as Crystal Orange. All of the hotel literature,
towels and stationaries says just Orange Hotel. Orange appears to be new hotel chain that is starting up in China with many locations in Beijing.

Our stay was not a bad experience, but after seeing how all the previous reviews gave the hotel 4 and 5 ratings, our expectations might have been set a little high. They did have free internet access and the bed was comfortable.

We stayed at the Crystal Orange Hotel based on the high recomendations given by other reviewers. Indeed we were not disappointed at all. Room was super clean, comfortable and decorated in the minimalist style with ultra modern facilities. The staff were all very helpful in providing information and directions to various sites. Breakfast was rather average though, would help if they provided proper cups rather than disposables for the coffee! Loved the location of the hotel, a "must" visit is to the park across the road in early morning. The ambience was incredibly peaceful and you get to watch the locals practising "tai chi".
