“Great little hostel!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2014

The location is perfect if you want to be within walking distance of the more scenic attractions in the area - the mountains! Transport links into the city are good too, just a short bus ride into the centre.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The room I had (private double) was a little small but very clean and included an en-suite. The common area is furnished with comfy couches and I found the other guests very friendly - I met one guest who was a long time resident and he invited a few of us to a nearby club which turned into a really great night!

The food on offer at the hostel is also pretty good, and they serve until pretty late which is handy. All in all it's a great hostel!

We stayed here for one night during our roadtrip through a couple southern cities over the Chinese New Year and were happy to find the hostel with what appears to be a full team of staffers. Our private room was a little small, and had some sad and dreary looking furniture. Mostly clean, but we didn't bother to look too close (which is the case for the bathroom as well). Fortunately, we don't spend more time than needed in the rooms or the lobby. The location is alright, but you'd think it was the perfect spot, since every hostel is located on the same hill side with them. You can take a bike out and reach the lake and tea fields easily.

The staff was pretty great all around, except for when we mentioned several times about how we were driving in and not one person on the phone thought it would be wise to mention the altered traffic pattern on their street, causing us to take a 45 min detour through gridlocked traffic. On the other hand, they did hold that parking spot for us (worth mentioning the free parking?) and they did treat us to a round of coffee in the morning.

Overall, a very average place staffed with hard working people in an alright location. If I return to Hangzhou soon, I will consider staying here again.

Stayed for two nights in this cozy hostel in November 2013. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and speak amazing english. Right from when we entered the premisses we were treated like friends and Owen invited us for a night on the town (unfortunately we were too tired from the long travels). They helped us get tickets for the impressions show, which was well worth the approx. 260 RMB each (no need to get the best seats, the view is good from all the seats). We stayed in a traditional room with a really pretty bed carved from wood. The mattress is a bit thin, but the sheets are clean and smell fresh. Breakfast is ok, and cheaper if you order the day before. We would definitely come here again :)

We had asked when we booked the room for specific directions on how to reach the guesthouse from the airport. Unfortunately we were provided by the guesthouse the incorrect bus number so it proved a rather frustrating as we spent ages walking around looking for the bus and had to end up catching an expensive taxi ride. Also, our taxi driver struggled to locate the guest house in the dark. Recommend to have a print out of the map it will help you locate the guesthouse in the evening.
The guesthouse does provided a clean, warm and inviting lounge area with plenty of couches, tv, plenty of books to read and there is a friendly dog and kitten. For a double bed it cost ¥228 per night (I thought it was rather expensive for a guesthouse given the rooms could do with some attention). Beds were standard firmness for China and our room did not face the main road so it was rather quiet.
Across the road from the guesthouse is a bunch of local restaurants, there is a great noodle house where you can get a large bowl of beef noodle soup for ¥9 (they don't have an English menu or speak English so you will need to speak mandarin to order). The guesthouse does provide food however we didn't eat there.
We enquired about getting to tangkou, the staff on shift the evening we arrived had very limited English and were not very useful. However, the next morning another lady was on shift and she had excellent English as well as able to provided us with useful information.
Location wise, the guesthouse was a pain to get to (as mentioned above) but otherwise The guesthouse is located 2 stops away from the lake and a short bus ride away from high street shops which is rather convenient.

We planned to stay 2 nights at the West Lake in Hangzhou, but after the first afternoon in the hostel and the tea-hills around we booked an additional 2 nights. We had a 'twin' room which was really 2 queen beds in a spacious room on the first floor (2nd in China). It was at the side of the road, but we had no problems sleeping at all. It was a bit chilly already at night, but the aircon's heating function worked properly.

The rooms arent really what make this hostel great... the seating area downstairs, the staff and the location do! It's very easy to chat with other travellers there, but equally easy to keep to yourself. Wifi works properly, there's a tv, they serve decent food and the fridge serves cheap beers.

The staff was extremely friendly from the moment we walked in, helped with suggestions which bus to take, where to rent a mountainbike, how to change a train-ticket (written Chinese note) and even took us out for a few drinks downtown.

The hostel is located uphill from the lake towards the tea-hills. We were happy we stayed there as we went to place we might've otherwise not seen: the area is so beautiful with it's tea-hills, forests and ponds. Buses stop close to the hostel and it's easy to get to the lake or even city. If you like biking, rent a mountainbike (ask the staff, there's a rental right next door) and explore the area. A great 3 hour route (with stops) is via Nine Creeks to the big river and back up the road where the hostel is located. Lots of place to stop and enjoy the sights.

We came to Hangzhou for the lake and got so much more. Apart from a few drinks we didn't see the city and only spend time in greenery. If that's what you want as well, stay at Touran's.

Why people moan about hard beds etc etc I don't know?? They don't pretend to be anything else but a hostel. Fantastic location especially for biking whether you turn left towards the lakes or better still go right on to Hupao Lu and into the hills such as the nine creeks. The shabby ness gave it charm and definitely not dirty. Personally we found the staff to be very helpful and easy to get on with, I should give a special mention to Xiao Xue such sweet natured person and of course not forgetting Owen. We know China can be hard work especially dealing with people but these guys deserves a break, be nice and sure they will do the same.

We liked staying at the Tour'an Guesthouse because it has all the positives that a good guesthouse should have. It has a community feeling, a traveller's news bulletin board, dorms, used books, an English menu with Western food, comfortable common room and seating outside, cheap beer.
It's a 20 min walk from the lake.
All of these things make Tour'an a desirable place to stay, particularly when compared to a hotel.
The staff struggled in English but were friendly enough and our limited Chinese helped a bit. To be expected. They were quite friendly I thought.
There was a nice mellow dog who had just had puppies. Our 8 year old was in heaven.
The only problem is a common one in the PRC. Maintenance.
The bathroom was constantly wet as the sink leaked onto the floor and into the main room. The paint was pealing from the walls. It all had a bit of a prison feel to it. If you want a room for sleeping only, this might be ok for you. We have two children and tend to prefer dryer environments.
My only other gripe was the breakfast. It is really and truly not good. Again, not the end of the world but take my advice and avoid it at all costs.
I think there are a lot of guesthouses in Hangzhou. This one is OK. Some others might be better.

Room Tip: We stayed at the top floor in room 215. The bathroom had a constant puddle of water on the floor. Th...
