The garden used to belong to Hu Xueyan, a rich merchant back in the Qing Dynasty. A typical example of Chinese traditional garden but it is interesting to see the large western-style chandeliers glorifying the main hall. Near Qinghefang Pedestrian Street, entrance fee is RMB20/person.

In the midst of Hangzhou, behind thick stone walls is the former of residence of this successful 19th Century businessman. The exterior belies the beautiful gardens and rich rooms and furnishings in the residence. The house itself is divided into several large compounds -- one for Mr. Hu, one for his wife, one for his Mother and one for his concubines. Mom definitely had nice accommodations and in fact in one room in the entry, you will see two hand carriages, one for Mr. Hu and one for his Mother. Take your time as you move through the house to appreciate the detail, carving and metal works. The garden is lovely with carp filled ponds and pretty plantings.

I read it from book that I am so enthusiastic to visit once I come to Hangzhou.

Personally I think it is not far from the Hangzhou Railway station by walk (15-20 mins walk along the Jiangcheng Road 江城路 and turn right to Wang Jiang Road 望江路, then ask people where is not far already).

This residence was built by a very successful business man Mr. Hu Xueyan. From architecture to all the interior design, we could explore how successful and rich life Mr. Hu Xueyan had in 1870s.

The garden is definitely stunning. It is a terrific historical attraction.

Hope you enjoy your visit

What a fantastic residence. Having David Wei from hangzhouprivatetours.com strolling through the residence with you giving a detailed description of the history was just fantastic.
Call him, you will miss to much by your self.
