“Huts In The Woods”
Reviewed 20 August 2012

We spent an enchanted two days in this enchanting location by the West Lake. The nicely-decorated cabins are small but their coziness was part of what made the experience special. There's not much room for for luggage--or moving around--but we had no problem making do. The bed advertised as King size was anything but (Queen? Full?). Don't plan to share a cabin with anyone you're not comfortable being intimate with. The bathroom was immaculately clean. The cabin was damp and slightly musty when we arrived--the buildings are in the woods by a lake after all--but a dehumidifier is provided and within a few hours the dampness and odor were gone. We had dinner under stately trees and stars on our first night. The food was decent and wine is available. (Most of the wine is Chinese or French red, quite expensive, and not stored under the best conditions: a metal box in a shed that is open to elements throughout the year. There's a second storage area beneath one of the service buildings. Be sure to request a bottle from there.) If you're desperate for a taste of home, there are 2 Starbucks both within a 10-minute walk on the lake grounds.

The hotel is a two-minute walk from the road and taxi drivers will not know where to drop you off. Bring the hotel phone # and have the driver call the hotel as soon as you are in the area. A staff member will meet you at the road and escort you through the woods. There was a problem with the credit card machine at the checkout and the clerk didn't know how to handle it. Also, there were no taxis available and we nearly missed our train so be sure to arrange transportation the night before departure and leave plenty of time for checkout. In general, the staff is extremely friendly and eager to help.

The eastern shore of West Lake is crowded, overrun by day trippers. The Lotus Glade is secluded in the Northwest section of the lake where less crowds and more park make it possible to fully appreciate the evocative, justly famous lake scenery.

Room Tip: King beds are not king size

This hotel is beautiful, very relaxing in the middle of the wood next to the lake. Getting more explanation about how to reach the hotel would be helpfull before going there tho.

People there are lovely and very considerate. The room is well equiped, and the outside dining area is even better than lot of restaurants we have tried around the hotel.

My overall stay at this hotel was extremely unsatisfactory.

1. Location
Although location is just next to Westlake, it is in a secluded part (as most have mentioned in other reviews) Thus making it difficult to hail a cab when one wants to get around to other parts of Hangzhou. It is also dark when walking back to the hotel at night as the park is dimly-lit.

2. Rooms
The state of rooms are unsatisfactory. I found the rooms small (I'm Asian and am not big in size) and there was little space to move around in. The toilet had a smelly musty stench as well. Bath water temperature was not consistent (was extremely hot or extremely cold). Also be prepared for many insects in the room. There was also a basket of amenities which consisted of disposable men's underwear and a pack of condoms(*see next comment)

3. Room Rates
On most hotel websites, the "hotel" charges daily rates. HOWEVER, to my horror, I discovered that the hotel offers 1-hour rates which meant that it was a place for lover's clandestine romp.

4. Staff Service
Staff service is unfriendly. When I requested to cancel my booking with the hotel citing the reasons for my discomfort about their hourly rates, the hotel manager used the excuse and stated that Shangri-La hotel also offers hourly rates. When I pressed further, the hotel manager withdrew his comment.

5. Overall
I would not recommend this hotel for the above-mentioned reasons. Although this hotel has been recommended on CNN.GO, I feel that it is deceiving. What you see is not what you get.

We stayed at the Lotus Glade as part of a 9-day trip in China. Our driver and guide had a great deal of difficulty locating this property. There was no signage on the main road and when we finally found the entrance, we were barred from entering the road by two very unfriendly guards. Heated words were exchanged, a call was made to the hotel, and finally a woman walked down the lane and sorted things out and we were allowed to proceed. Our vehicle could not drive up to the entrance of the property and we had to drag our bags over very bumpy paths to our cabin. (Note: this is not a "hotel" - it is a group of small cabins).
All-in-all, once found, the location was beautiful, the cabin, although tiny, was cute and cozy, and we enjoyed our two nights here. Our cabin had very limited space for luggage - a closet with two broken hangers, no drawers, and no luggage rack. Definitely not a place for anyone with lots of luggage! This would be a perfect romantic weekend get-away.

This property is just wonderful - upscale cabins set in the most beautiful setting - scattered among trees and tropical plants just a few steps from the shore of West Lake. The cabins are cozy but nice touches and very nice bathroom with nice features and thick white towels. Very clean. Number 53 overlooks a lotus pond and has a private patio out back.

Be sure to visit the pagoda overlooking the lake - great photo spot just out the back gate- across the stone bridge and around the bend! Walk in any direction for amazing flowers, water features, lots of stone bridges, architecture etc. The path along the lake is beautiful. The park across the street is a huge botanic garden and is not crammed with hundreds of tourists.

Starbucks is about ten minute walk - go to the street, turn right and follow sidewalk to first street - bear right - go down about two blocks. Shops along the way and KFC across the street. Angelo's pizza was wonderful.

Staff were very compentent and went out of their way to accomadate us - traveling with small children and family.

The location of this wonderful hotel is supurb, it is right on the lake - we had the cabin overlooking the water - what more can you ask.EVEN though the cabin is small, it is very cozy and has all the amenities you have at a much larger place. We had the pleasure of meeting Yi's boyfriend who came down from Shanghai to help out.The restaurant produces very good meals, since we did not feel like looking for restaurants, or taking a taxi to one. This is a much better alternative of staying in the city proper.

I hadn't realized how close to the lake we would be when I made the reservation, but in fact the easiest access to the hotel (aka huts, but Americans would call them cabins) was from the path around the lake itself! Very pleasant, and on a warm sunny evening in late April, a delight to sit outside for meals or just enjoying the air in the common courtyard. The cabins/rooms are small but pristine and comfortable. (I suppose if it were raining for days one would feel a little stuck.) Bathroom/shower modern and clean. Breakfasts were Chinese food only, although the wide array included fried eggs. A beautiful spot to enjoy West Lake. Note other reviews' comments about difficulty of finding Lotus Glade by taxi.
