Location is very close to mayhem that is the city centre of Hangzhou, yet it is surrounded by tranquillity. From about forty minutes to an hour from the international airport depending on traffic.

This property I am told is one of the first few international standard hotels that opened. Of similar vintage to the Shangri-la Hotel down the road. This is where the similarity ends between the two.

This hotel feels completely NEW! One would not realise that the property is old but for the fact that I was told.

The lobby is grand with both porters and reception being attentive.

The accommodation is located in 5 (or was it 6) tower blocks.

Corridors are bright and clean.

The room is not huge but is adequate size with all the necessary facilities one would require and expect of a 5 star property.

The bed is stupendously comfortable and I must admit to having a great sleep for the 4 nights I was in the hotel. The fact that the pillows were great helped as well.

Full amenities were there in the bathroom and these are of good quality.
Bathrobes and bath towels are all very fluffy and of good cotton.

There is a laptop size safe in the room which means you can put your 15 inch laptop in there if you needed to.

Breakfast had a great spread with a range of Western, Chinese and international foods available. The pastries are very nice.

I had the buffet lunch in here on one day and it was very good as well with a Japanese Sushi and Sashimi station apart from all the usual Western and Chinese selections.

The bar at the reception is good and staff generally very attentive.

Tried out the cigar lounge near Accommodation Tower 3 and this was alright though the staff here had to run to the bar at reception for all orders which does cause a little delay. But staff are attentive.

My package at the property had wifi included. Wifi speed was acceptable IF it worked. Problem is that one has to log in every 20 minutes when the system kicks you off. So this was an inconvenient thing.

Attended a conference in the hotel and all the food that was catered, staff attention and arrangements were magnificent and even better than many international hotel chains in China.

I would come back here to stay any time. It is a most luxurious location.

Room Tip: The nearest accommodation Tower blocks to reception are 1,2 & 3. Tower 3 is almost next to the b...

Government owned and successful. In order to reduce tax liabilities they have a rather large annual CapEx budget. The guest rooms are fitted out to the max right up to the peep hole in your door with view into the corridor being a video camera with screen. Sophisticated AV system etc etc. Avoid the Italian for dinner. Otherwise you will be just fine!

This hotel is on the northern part of West Lake which in my view is an excellent location, as many of the attractions are either on the west or east side of the lake. Plus it is very easy to get a taxi from this hotel. The service was friendly and all around excellent. The rooms are spacious and clean. The decor is very pretty. There is a large pond at ground level in the courtyard with koi - very nice to walk around. We stayed for a couple of nights, but did not have breakfast at the hotel as it seemed a bit pricey and there are so many other places to eat.

We were upgraded to this hotel by our travel company, as the hotel we were going to stay at was being renovated. Stayed for 2 nights as part of our China Tour. As other have said, it is a lovely hotel, but has little atmosphere as most guests seem to eat in the large conference rooms. We decided to eat in their Italian Restaurant for a change from chinese food - the meal was good but there were only another 4 people eating in a large room - hence the lack of atmosphere. The bedroom was huge, as was the bathroom. (The large glass partition between toilet and bedroom mentioned by a previous guest is made completely opaque by a simple switch in the bathroom). Lots of gadgets, and very comfortable. However, the biggest drawback for us was that, unlike the hotel we had originally been booked in, the hotel is quite a distance from the lake, so we were unable to get to it at night (we had been to it in the day) as we had been told taxis were hard to come by to get back to the hotel. So, lovely as the hotel is, if you are on a holiday rather than a conference, I would suggest booking somewhere nearer the lake for easier access.

The Dragon is a Chinese conference center hotel, renovated in 2010. As other reviews point out, this is a modern hotel with nice technological bells and whistles. Room service, for example, can be ordered using the TV and the "smart" room key activates signs that direct you to your room. However, it's important to set the right expectations here. This is a luxury hotel but it is NOT the equivalent of the Hyatt or the Shangri-la. It's a different product. The design is nice but it does not have the sizzle that would be expected at those other hotels.

Overall I would say this hotel was designed by someone who had seen pictures of what a luxury hotel looks like but had never stayed in one themselves. For example, many of the modern hotels put glass between the bath area and the bedroom, giving a more open feel to a small room. Here, the rooms are quite large and this feature isn't needed but worse, the window to the bath area places the "throne" on full front display. Normally a window like this would expose the tub or sink, but not the toilet.

The gym and pool are modern and clean but not 5 star, and not particularly attractive. There is a spa but I didn't use it so can't give an opinion.

The location is a 20 minute taxi to the lake, and other tourist spots are reachable. The immediate surroundings are not the most interesting parts of Hangzhou. It's a large hotel so there are plenty of taxis coming and going.

The hotel has limited restaurant options. The food is good quality but caters more to the Chinese customer. The breakfast buffet has an egg station and breads, but the fruit juices are not fresh and the ham came out of a can (probably spam). I ordered a cappuccino but was told that nobody had turned on the machine so it would be 20 minutes to arrive.

The hotel provides wifi everywhere, and it's free which is a big plus. The hotel should also get credit for using recycled items like pens and paper, although they could do more to make it a truly "green" hotel.

Bottom line, if you're attending a conference here then this will be one of the better facilities used for that purpose and you can look forward to your stay.

If you're on holiday, then you might get a bargain here if you want the 5 star (hardware) facilities but can do without the glamour of the Hyatt, and don't need the specialized services that come with those room rates. The staff are attentive and try hard, but they aren't set up for tourists as much as for conference attendees.

Was on a business trip (I am American) and stayed at the Dragon for several days. This may be the finest hotel I've seen in either country. Gorgeous lobby, stunning rooms, everything first class and clean, amazing bathrooms in the room. Service was top-notch, with things being done under the radar and very nicely. Even space-age innovations like a key that you merely swipe for a read, no inserting in a notch, and when you get off the elevator a sign lights up pointing you to your room. Necessary? No. Cool? Yes. Very difficult to imagine a better place.

Stayed here recently. Great service, great hotel. Very, Very upscale and high tech. Gorgeous rooms, amazing bathroom. Across the street is a path that takes you through the hills of Hangzou to some hilltop temples and eventually to the lake. Great English speaking staff. You would be hard pressed to find a better hotel in Hangzhou!
