I stayed at the Westlake Hostel only for 2 nights. The Location is great - its quiet and you just have to do a few steps to the Westlake - such a nice place there! There rooms are fair enough for what i paid - just checked the prices now! They raised it up exponential. Downstairs is a small area to sit, not really cozy - but free wifi available there. The staff was ok, not really friendly but even not unfriendly.

Overall average hostel.

Rooms ok hostel standard except that the windows could not close/lock due to missing handle. Note that the pictures of the rooms on the website are misleading, the rooms are not new anymore.

Prepare to wake up early, because of the two neighbouring schools playing very loud music every morning from 7.30 to about 8.30 just outside the windows (some kind of morning exercises and one day also band practising outside). We could not sleep even with earplugs.

Location is a bit far from city center (about 2.5 km).

Very friendly and helpful staff, speaking english!

The only good thing about this hostel is it's location, you can literally just cross the street and you are on the west lake and there's a bus station right in front that will take to all the touristy spots.

The room was so small, you could fit a bed in there and that's it, the bathroom as well a sink, toilet and the shower was above the the toilet. It wasn't clean, the linens had spots on them and there were also spiders in the room.
You have to keep in mind that they literally close the door at 1pm and if you don't back by then they'll leave you out.
For me it was ab awfull experience i left during the night and i moved to a real hotel.
The staff was a big plus, they were all very friendly and they spoke good english. I really appreciated that they gave me my money back for the night i didn't stay there.
If you are on a tight budget, chose another hostel, or just spend a few extra rmb and get a decent hotel.

Went to Hangzhou for a night during the NYE holidays and booked a room in Westlake Youth Hostel through agoda.com. Took a cab to the hostel upon arrival at the train station and the cab driver did not where it is. Lucky thing that I did my research prior to the trip and I manage to direct the driver to the hostel. (Note: The hostel is not located on the main road on Nanshan and you need to walk about 15 meters through a small lane.)
Check-in process was pleasant and the staff there are friendly. We wanted to upgrade to the sky windows room but there wasn't any available. So, we took one of the rooms on the ground floor. The room was very basic with 2 single beds and one old TV. The air-conditioner works fine and manage to keep us warm in the winter weather. Bathroom is also very basic and a little old - towels are provided but not toiletries. What they could have done better is to provide us floor towels as the floor gets wet after a shower.
Breakfast is not provided but you can place an order the night before and get a discount. We had breakfast there the next day and it was an okay breakfast. However, they do have great and cheap coffee - only 10RMB. What is really good about the hostel is the location. You can walk to the Leifeng Pagoda which is only 10 minutes away. Transportation is convenient too. You can either hail a cab at the main road or rent a bike with the hostel at RMB40 per day. I would come back again but this time try their sky windows room instead.

I stayed here for two night in their single room, which was basic but adequate and ensuite. Food both Western and Chinese downstairs, cheap beer, lounge/bar to hang around in. Wifi and computer terminals to use. These guys spoke great English, were very helpful and knew the types of things travellers need. Location is a little out of the way for bars and restaurants, but good for touring the lake and surrounds during the day. Buses and cabs can get you back and forth from where there's a bit more going on. This was a nice place to stay and a good place to be as a single traveller for meeting people downstairs. If you're looking for a hostel, you won't regret this one. Good value too. Two other comments: it backs onto a school, so you'll get woken up by the kids on a weekday morning, but you'll want to get up and see the lakes and gardens before they're overrun with other tourists anyway. It's also quite hard to see from the road, so peer down the paths and alleys running off the main road to spot it.

This hostel is great, especially considering it's supposed to be a youth hostel, and one often doesn't associate that concept with nice things.

The pros are the rooms, the staff, and the food. We had a double room with a private room and it was basic but exactly what we needed and wanted. The staff was friendly and gave good recommendations. And the food was tasty (although I could certainly have gone for what the employees were eating together--it looked great, but it was only for them, haha).

The only cons are related to location. It's right next to a school, so kids were loudly exercising outside our window at about 7 am. However, the staff warned us about that, and they even had a prominent sign when we checked in. So no big deal. The location seemed to confuse our taxi driver. I showed him the address and the information that was on the hostel's website, but he still got lost and went fairly out of the way to get there (and it's actually a pretty easy stretch). But he may have been dumb.

All in all, I'd recommend this place.

Room Tip: Try to not be on the side of the school.

I stayed at Westlake Youth Hostel for 2 nights and it was a good rest for me after a hectic tour in Shanghai. The hostel is situated just a 5 minutes walk from Xihu (Westlake). The staff were helpful in assisting me to book a tour and giving directions to various places. I didn't eat in and chose to walk further out for the local stalls (which is a good choice I guess since there are more local delights located within the Xihu compound). Overall, thumbs up for the oriental-western fusion feel both on the outside and within of Westlake Youth Hostel.
