“OK hot spring hotel”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

We stayed here one night so cannot give a very full review of the hotel. We stayed at a non-smoking room on 15/F in the main building (主館) which is having a view of the mountain.
The room is a Japanese and western style max, meaning there is an area with Japanese style flooring and table that you sit on the famous tatami mats. The beds are however western style so we foreigners can enjoy good sleeps.
The key point of this hotel is the hot springs it offers. There are 2 floors with hot spring, one on the basement and one on the roof top. The roof top one on 16/F is especially good to enjoy at night time with the clear sky in Hokkaido the hot spring offers a great view of the mountain and sky at the same time.
Our room package is with dinner and breakfast which I think the dinner buffet is just so so but the breakfast buffet having a better quality.
Jozankei is not a big area so no matter which hot spring hotel you're going to stay it's not a long walk to go around all attractions to the area. Having said that Jozankei View Hotel is the farthest away from the attractions but it's only a matter of 100 meters farther away, so it doesn't bother us at all.
The free car park is big so driving to the hotel would be a good choice.

Room Tip: Choose high level non-smoking room to get better views

From outside the hotel looks like a hospital. It's massive but aged. You can see how many people are there during breakfast and dinner time - the restaurant can accomodate 700 people. The buffet meal is average, which is expected in such a massive resort. The room is not well heated, but the bedding is comfortable and warm. The water park is free of charge, which is a nice surprise, but it's too simple. There is only one water slide for tube, and the kids got bored after 2 hours in the park. Since there are so many people in the hotel, it takes long time to get into the elevator and to check out.

Jozankei view has indeed a great view, especially from the rooftop Onsen. For the price, this is well worth a visit. Rooms are a bit small but not oppressively so, just Japanese standard and thus a little smaller that European rooms. The whole place is glittery and airy with lots of glass, gold and typical Japanese prints on the walls. It gives an air of opulence although, for the price, I assume that it's all superficial. But, then again, who cares? We were on a fixed menu lunch but full buffet breakfast and dinner. Lunch was so-so but breakfast and dinner were very good, with a wide choice and good quality. We normally ate in the ordinary dining room but on our last morning ate in the special dining room. It was really good. Breakfast scored an impressive 7.5/10 on the Ulster Fry scale.

We were booked there for 2 days, but could suffer only one night there ( and to be honest wanted to quit as soon as we arrived there). We changed rooms 3 times, first it was a stinky small room in the old building, next two in ( they call it ) new building. The disgusting smell of smoke was everywhere, in the old rooms stronger than in the "new" rooms. Suffered there one day only because of the kids, they liked the pool ( though it was as old as the rest of the place) . Eating area is just a really huge canteen with many many tables and chairs, dinner was ok, breakfast - very poor. It really reminded me of the family resorts of 1970s. It is old. So, if you dont want a stinky smell of smoke to haunt you all over and if you can afford a little more...i strongly advice to choose a different hotel.

Travel agencies often offer special discounted overnight stays that include breakfast and all day access to the water park lagoon.

Rooms are small and very basic so don't expect any frills. The hotel has a number of hotels serving various types of food. We had dinner in the western style restaurant and found the food fair.

In our experience, however, the only reason to stay at this hotel is for pool park for the children. If you are interested in fine dining and a nice hotel room it may be better to search for a hotel within Sapporo and take the 40 min drive to pool park at this hotel for the day. Have lunch at Jozankei view and end the day sometime around 3pm so that you be back in Sapporo well before dinner time. If you are not Japanese and not familiar with the Sapporo region however it may be wiser to bite the bullet and stay at this hotel. Don't misunderstand my comment as suggesting that the Jozankei hotel is sub-standard however. It is not that Jozankei View hotel is below standard but that for the price of this tourist hotel Sapporo has many super hotels and dining opportunities.

Jozankei View Hotel tends to be filled with families and the many tourists from China and Korea that fill the lobby and pools. It is nevertheless the best spot in the greater Sapporo area for children to have fun.

We went on a day trip to Jozankei View Hotel in early May during the Golden Week. Me & my wife had fun at the swimming lagoon area, especially at the wave pool and the dead sea pool - esp the feeling of floating on water. We could also enjoy the sauna & outdoor onsen (beside the swimming lagoon) together. What we like abt this hotel was that we not only can experience the traditional onsen, me & my wife could also be together to enjoy the swimming lagoon, sauna & outdoor onsen together. The rooftop open air onsen on the 16th floor had a spectacular view as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our first time trying onsen in Japan.

The hotel has a very large area of pool and spa, complete with waterslides and flowing pool, and your children will love it.
But apart from that, we think there is little reason to stay at this hotel.
The hotel is very big and consists of two buildings.
The main building is older, and its rooms, cheaper than the annex, seem less appealing but at least clean and OK.
The buffet dinner was just OK but it was very crowded, and compared with other ‘onsen’ hotels in the same price range, its quality and variety seemed quite mediocre.
We got an off-season rate of 7,000 yen (about US$73) per person including buffet dinner and breakfast (5,000 yen for our five-year-old son), and we think that was good value.
But in the peak season they charge 10,000 yen or more for the same plan, and we think that is quite overpriced.
So we recommend this hotel only if you have young children who enjoy their pool area, do not mind the crowded restaurant, and then only if you can get an off-season rate of perhaps 8,000 yen or less.
