“Beer fantastic - museum so so”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

Free to get in you are immediately directed onto a walking tour depicting the history and making of Sapporo beer. We found the museum lacking in substance and actually a bit boring other than the room of posters depicting advertising campaigns through the ages. Finally you come to the tasting room where via a ticket machine you can buy an individual beer for JPY200 each or 3 different types for JPY500 - each purchase accompanied by a small cheese snack. The beer was fantastic and buying 3 allowed for an opportunity to try the different flavours. You can walk outside In the grounds where there are various restaurants including the drink all the beer you want/eat all the lamb you want ... all delivered via a cook your own BBQ. Food was OK but be prepared to come out reeking of the smell of cooking - all clothes went straight into the washing machine

“delicious fresh beer”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

No entrance fee, cheap (and really delicious) beer, and English provided. What more could you ask for? I definitely have new respect and appreciation for Sapporo beer.

Lovely place, did not charge for entrance. All you do is buy a ¥500 token from the machine and enjoy sampling the beer

“Don't miss this attraction!”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

The Museum is a don't miss and the like most of Japan, they know how to preserve their history and heritage. Beautiful buildings and grounds. Don't miss the Sapporo Bier Garden and the Ghengis Kahn dinner!

“How can you go wrong with a museum dedicated to beer?”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

I visited this 'museum' on one of the last snowy days in early April and I must admit that our initial reason and motivation for going was to sample the beer. In fact, the old factory grounds and building have been well preserved and the small exhibition on the history of the company was very well done. They do have a rather quirky part of the exhibition that is made up of animation like characters living in a beer making paradise! It was a bit strange as they all looked like children- and a couple of them appear to have passed out from too much beer... I guess no place in Japan would be complete without a few obligatory animation characters!

On the walls of another exhibition room leading to the beer hall, all of the posters from past to present are on display. It was rather interesting to see how advertisements/strategies have changed over the decades. Some from long ago were actually rather provocative, but what I noticed most was the sudden gap of any posters during the World War II period. I was left wondering what that meant. Were there no posters then? or for some reason is it no longer appropriate to show posters/promotions from that time?
Once you get to the sample hall, there is a vending machine for tickets that are given to the attendant in exchange for beer. We selected the sample selection of 3 beers for 500 yen. This comes with one free snack- you can choose either a small packet of crackers OR a small packet of locally produced soft cheese, but you cannot have both a packet of cheese and a packet of crackers unless you have two separate tickets for beer!
Overall, we had a good time and enjoyed both the displays and refreshing beer samples. We also had a great lunch at one of the restaurants that make up the complex. This is a small museum promoting beer with a pretty good gift shop for souvenirs and for what it is, it was lovely!
