“A Unique Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

We booked one night in the World Friendship Centre after reading reviews on here. They were all true. The directions provided from Hiroshima Station by the Street Car were perfect and we were able to follow them easily. The warmth of Richard and Xinia's welcome was genuine and we felt at home straight away. They had printed off maps for us and suggested places for dinner and activities to do. Our main objective was to lean about the history of Hiroshima and the advice and opportunities provided through the WFC were unique and made the experience highly profound. We were able to have a personal tour around the Peace Memorial Park and have a private conversation with a Hiroshima survivor. This made the experience personal and humbling. It was wonderful to have everything organised for us in such a caring way. We were very fortunate to be the only guests staying for the night so didn't have to queue for the shared bathroom. The bedroom was beautifully comfortable with air-conditioning and the breakfast of cereal, toast and fruit was super. It was lovely to be able to sit down for a family style breakfast with Richard and Xinia. Again, I'm not sure if this would have been possible if more guests were staying but the quality of the conversation, combined with the lovely food and warmth of hospitality made this a special part of the experience. As and when we return to Hiroshina we will certainly stay here again and highly recommend it to you as a unique experience that will stay in the memory for a long time to come.

Such a wonderful place!!! Richard and Xinia were so welcoming and accommodating.. the room was so clean with the most comfortable futons to sleep in.. There was wifi... Breakfast in the morning was amazing.. the location was fantastic, everything was within walking distance and getting trams was easy.. So easy to get to from Hiroshima Station by the tram and I was welcomed at the Tram stop by Richard. I would recommend this to everyone! I was so sad to leave and can't wait to go back..

We were a group of six - 4 adults and 2 children - staying during Golden Week, the busiest travel time in Japan. We stayed in the annex, which was perfect for us. The rooms were cozy and very clean, the breakfast was great, and the location was just what we wanted - a 10 minute walk from the Peace museum and Peace Park. There are also several restaurants within walking distance from the guesthouse.
Xinia and Richard, the directors, were incredibly helpful. They arranged for an A-bomb survivor to come and tell us her story - this was the most powerful part of our trip. If possible, please make the time and the request to hear a hibakusha story. I highly recommend a stay at the World Friendship Center!

I couldn't say more positive things about WFC: Xinia and Richard were excellent hosts and made quite an impression. They organized a tour through the Piece Memorial park and helped me out with their extensive knowledge. I couldn't have asked for more: If you're sick of hotels or hostels (like I was), this place is the PERFECT accomodation for Hiroshima! Great and almost family-like atmosphere, comfortable and large rooms and a nice breakfast at an unbeatable price.

We stayed here for two nights and met the two volunteers of the foundation. This place is special – not just a place to stay. We were welcomed and told the story of Barbara Reynolds and her fight to bring justice to the atomic bomb survivors. We were fortunate enough to be able to meet a survivor who told us her story. We also had a walking tour of the Peace Park. This day was a really special part of our visit to Japan.

The rooms themselves are very comfortable – very comfortable futons on tatami mats and a warm heater. The shared bathroom is adequate with very warm water (the heater outside the bathroom was much appreciated also). There is wifi in the rooms. There are no kitchen facilities however a good breakfast is provided and there is a fabulous okonomiyaki restaurant just two doors down.

We spent time visiting Miyajima and the famous tori gate of Itsukushima shrine – quite beautiful!

Room Tip: There are only a few rooms here so book in early if you'd like to stay.

A two-day stay at the World Friendship Centre in Hiroshima was a very memorable experience.

With the tram system nearby, the Centre was convenient for visiting most tourist attractions, such as the Peace Memorial Park, Hypocentre and Miyajima. We found the reference material held at the Centre to be valuable for our visit to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Informative talks with fellow travellers and the directors of the Centre were definitely a bonus.

The Centre is located in a residential area, which meant quiet surroundings at night. A home-like stay while away from home.
