The reception by kimono-dressed receptionists immediately sets the mood for a cultural experience. Although the Ryokan has the facilities of a business hotel -- elevator, western style bar -- it does not deter from an authentic Onsen experience. The Onsen is large and well equipped, with an outdoor iron-rich hot spring, and an indoor mineral hot spring. Breakfast is as good as it gets. Definitely a bucket list destination. Checked.

Room Tip: Stay at least 2 nights.

My husband and I spend an evening here, and loved the cultural experience! One of the reasons we chose to stay here was because you could book a private hot spring as a couple, rather than having to share a public one.
-Service: we were warmly welcomed and well taken care of. Upon arrival we were given a Japanese "bean" tea and traditional dress to wear. I was also given a ride to the elevator in a rickshaw- a fun first!
-Accommodations: the room was a traditional Japanese room covered in tatami mats that transformed from a living/ dining space into a bedroom for the evening. We slept in separate futons on the floor (I don't think there's such thing as a shared one for couples?), which were actually quite comfortable.
-Hot springs: the hot springs were terrific! You had to book a time to use one of several private springs, which wasn't a problem. We appreciated the privacy. We also loved that the hot springs were outdoors. We came in December, so it was chilly outside, but being in the hot springs felt incredible! Our favorite was when we booked the outdoor room that had 2 hot springs that allowed us to freely go from one to the other.
-Dining: for dinner we enjoyed a traditional Japanese meal in a private dining room. We sat on the tatami mat floor in our traditional dress, and were served a dozen courses of interesting foods! I wouldn't suggest trying this if you have a weak stomach, but if you're adventurous, then this is a great opportunity to taste different and unique foods! The kobe beef was hands down the best course of our meal!

How extraordinary is that.

The Arima Grand Hotel is #1 on TA, however if you want a more boutique Ryokan experience, with Michelin star quality food, then Kinzan is a better choice.

Kinzan is still a fairly large establishment, with facilities such as a banquet hall and conference rooms, a sizeable gift store, a Karaoke bar and even a piano bar. The onsen was huge, with both "silver" and "gold" water baths indoor, as well as an outdoor bath - all this just in the women's area. I guess the baths have to be large enough to accomodate the conference crowds..

The Ryokan was actually rather quiet, however I think Kinzan's occupancy rates are quite high judging by the booking engine on their website. I ended up booking our stay through a travel agent however as the online engine showed the Ryokan to be full on the nights that I wanted. Also, as we stayed 2 nights, the travel agent was able to arrange for a full course Kaiseki dinner the first night, and Kobe beef sukiyaki the 2nd night. As we stayed 2 nights, the Ryokan also threw in a free bento lunch set for us - although this was no ordinary bento box lunch of course.

Since the main reason for staying in a Ryokan is really the luxury meals served in the privacy of your rooms, not to mention a quick soak in the onsen before meals, we were in heaven here. The food was very fresh, sophisticated yet delicately flavored, and the hightlight of our stay.
