On our first evening in Kyoto, we took a walk to Gion and wandered up the hill to the shrine. It was early evening and the shrine was almost deserted. It was quiet and peaceful and the lanterns glowed prettily in the dusk. We enjoyed wandering around the shrine precinct, away from the hubbub of busy Kyoto below. It would be more informative to visit the shrine during the day, but it is a lovely retreat in the evening.
