I was impressed and really enjoyed my 2 nights stay there.
Agree with other travelers with the excellence of their service, the quality of the food and the comfortable of my stay.
The Japanese bath is amazing. I feel lucky that I experienced the traditional things watched from TV and always wonder about.
I will be back!

Room Tip: Book early as they only have 6 rooms.

First impressions were wonderful for Shiraume ryokan.

Location:
Excellent!
Just along the Shirakawa stream and across a small stone bridge flanked by 2 gorgeous plum trees which have been meticulously cared for many years.
It is a gorgeous sight to behold if you have the chance to see them in full bloom.
Walkable to many sights in Gion eg. the kabuki theatre, Yasaka-jinja. If you enjoy walking, it is possible to walk to Kiyomizu temple and Kodaiji temple as well as the big departmental stores eg, Takashimaya and teramachi street.
Buses or subways are also conveniently located to allow you to visit other sites eg Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji and Nijo-jo.
At night, you might chance a glimpse of maikos or geikos as they go about to their next function or dinner.

Rooms:
Beautifully appointed traditional rooms with a view of a small garden. Extremely comfortable with individual heating/air conditioning.
Extremely comfortable futon beds.
Tea making amenities and usually the okami-san (Tomoko-san) will provide complimentary small snacks (salty and sweet).
Some rooms have their own bathrooms and some only have a toilet. We stayed at the Umemi room which only had a toilet and a washbasin. We had a choice of using any of the shared public bathrooms which had heavenly hinoki bathtubs. The bathrooms can accommodate 2 people at once but you can lock the bathroom area to create a private haven for yourself.
Bathroom amenities are excellent and you are provided with your own take home toiletries (toothbrush, small towel, hairbrush) pouch at the end of the day.
They even provided facial cleansing gel, toner and a variety of moisturisers.
Wifi is free.
The tokonoma is "decorated" with a scroll, a beautiful ceramic bowl and different flowers everyday.
There is a small television in the room. Wifi is free. You can borrow books from the library which holds some interesting books regarding Kyoto area.

Meals:
Breakfast was excellent and ample in quantity.
I had the Japanese breakfast and my sister had Western but both were good.
We had kaiseki dinner for 1 night during our stay which was seasonal, fresh and a good introduction to those uninitiated.
They also offer a hotpot dinner or a beef steak dinner should you rather have something more familiar and less daunting.

They provide a happy hour of beers, wine, tea and fruit juices in the afternoon in the library area. There is also a computer in the library area.

Value:
For the location, quality of sleep, room amenities and meals Shiraume ryokan provides excellent value for money.

Service:
Wow !
Tomoko-san is an extremely beautiful and gracious host who spoke excellent English. She would pepper her conversation with interesting facts about the area, the sights to see and the food that is being served at Shiraume. Satoko-san (another staff member) was also extremely helpful and friendly.
Extremely helpful in organising restaurant reservations.
Helpful about providing information about special events in the temples (eg the night time illumination etc.)
They want you to feel like you are staying at home and coming back to your own home which they did very well.

One of my favourite places to stay.

Highly recommended.

We stayed in the Umekoyomi room with the lovely view of the river. I really love the location of the ryokan as it located in the heart of Gion, walking around at dinner time, I was able to meet a few real Geisha.

The room is spacious, the futon mattress and sheets are very comfortable. (size is double for each person). The room is divided into entrance area, individual bathroom, and a big bed room.

We tried the hot jacuzzi bath in the common bathroom, you can reserve it and use it all to yourself.

We had dinner and breakfast at the ryokan. I suggest to have dinner at dining hall then breakfast at your own room. Very delicate food, you can tell they put lots of effort in making those dishes.
The ryokan host served the dinner in person, she explained each dish patiently one by one. Learn the story how she came to hosting this long history ryokan.

Highly recommend, will come back.

We were lucky enough to enjoy a second 2 night stay at Shiraume in early March and I must admit I was a bit concerned that I had built it up in my memory. I shouldn't have worried as our second stay was as truly wonderful as our first. Our only regret is that we dined outside Shiraume for kaiseki this time - wish we had dined in again as, although the outside restaurant that we went to was really nice, it did not measure up to kaiseki at Shiraume.

The location in the old part of Kyoto is fantastic and the canal side location truly beautiful. We were lucky to have a first bloom of cherry blossom outside our window. Can only just imagine how sensational it must be at cherry blossom time.

Everything here is just perfect and although we probably never pay these type of room rates elsewhere it was definitely worth every cent.

Amazing and excellent place to stay. Best of Kyoto and Japan. Location, our room Umekoyomi, views to the canal, breakfast & dinner, baths/jacuzzi, staff hospitality -> just perfect. We enjoyed every minute ! Big Thanks to Tomoko and Satoko who made our visit unforgettable.
