Ryokan Kyoraku

Reviewed 13 November 2013 via mobile

We stayed at this ryokan on our first night in Kyoto. The place is 10 minutes walking from the station.
The ryokan is a proper Japanese accommodation: tatami, rolled up beds... you are given yukata (a Japanese dressing gown), towels and the opportunity to use a Japanese style bathroom. Be aware: the water is the same for all guests, never open the plug. So if you are a bit squeamish. ..just stick to the shower.
The place is very clean. There is hairdryer, tea, tv and slippers. Oh, and free wi fi.
It's expensive but it's still one of the cheapest in Kyoto. .. and I think it's worth the experience. Staff friendly and helpful.
I would go back.

This is a really pleasant place to stay. Rooms are clean, and in the traditional Japanese style. Wifi is free, and is very fast. The owners are incredibly nice and very very polite, and cook a mean Japanese breakfast (highly recommended).

Location is very close to the JR station, so easy to find upon arrival.

The only minor issue I have is the 11pm curfew (though we have crammed a lot of stuff into our holiday, so by this time we are usually home), and the fact that you need to leave the room between 10am and 3pm for cleaning. The second isn't really a problem either as it means we get up and about with a little bit of a lie in.

This isn't the cheapest place to stay, but then again accommodation is not cheap in Japan. The friendliness of the owners, the cleanliness, location and traditional style make this place a 'must' stay when in Kyoto. I'd definitely come again without a shadow of a doubt.

We stayed at Ryokan Kyoraku for 4 nights in a double rom with shared bathroom and found it to be clean, comfortable and very convenient. It's just a short walk from Kyoto train station and close to many of the attraction in central Kyoto. The hotel is also close to the bus terminal where you can catch buses to all the further attractions. The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke enough English to help us out when we needed some advice on sightseeing, bus timetables, etc. Great wifi in the room, guest laundry, very clean bathroom facilities, clean yukatas for you to wear within the ryokan every day and a lovely "homely" feel. The only thing to be aware of is that you can not stay in your room at all between 10:00am and 3:00pm, which was a little inconvenient some days.

Probably not a 'real thing' but still better than some other places claiming to the 'traditional Japanese style'.

Comfortable, clean, pleasant and convenient. Also, nicely located in the walking distance from the main JR station.

Plus you get a kimono-pajamas for the night:)

The location is really good. Very close to Kyoto Station. The ryokan is more like a hotel and not a real ryokan but it worth it.
We spend 4 nights there, in a japanese style room - sharing bathroom and toilets. What I liked is that you feel just like home. There is a shower room and a japanese bathroom and God knows how great it is to have a japanese bath after a day of walk/visit! Soooo relaxing!
Our room was big enough for 2 people, we slept on futon which was ok.
The whole ryokan is very clean (have to leave by 10am to 3pm so that they can clean everything) and there is a lift which is very convenient if you have a lot of stuff.
Helpfull staff as well.
I highly recommand this ryokan it's great value.

I stayed for 5 nights at this ryokan in Jan 2013. This is a very pleasant family run hotel, pretty simple layout of rooms, but I was out all day visiting wonderful Kyoto so it was great to have a well located room to come back to in the evening. If you are thinking of a trip to Kyoto, give yourself 3-4 days at least.

This was my first experience of a ryokan, and my first experience of Japan. It did not disappoint. The owner is very sweet and does all she can to help, but communication can be difficult!

The hotel is 200 metres from Kyoto station, which is pretty much a hub for everything you will want to see and do. Even the station itself is worth an extended visit! I took some great photos there!

If you are looking for something clean, comfortable and well located, with a touch of real Japanese experience thrown in, look no further.

And the Japanese breakfast is awesome, even after the fifth one!
