My friend picked out the Takao Kanko to experience an authentic Japanese ryokan. We were not disappointed. The room was clean and comfortable (for a futon mattress), and the bath temperature wasn't scalding hot -- we would later find out the baths at some ryokans are set to practically cook you alive. Breakfast the next morning was traditional Japanese, with many well presented small dishes, and was fairly tasty to boot.
The only real downside to the Takao Kanko is the distance from the city. Roughly 45 minutes by public transit from the more populated and touristy side of Kyoto, and the bus that services the hotel makes it's last stop there around 2100ish. So it's great if you have time to enjoy Kyoto at a slower pace, but there are closer choices for those who want to spend more time running around the city.More
