“An experience we cherish!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2014

We were an extended family (8 of us) traveling together over the Christmas holidays and our stay at this wonderful ryokan was one of the highlights of our trip. The rooms were lovely. We booked 3 rooms, 2 doubles and 1 family room for four of us (2 sons ages 19 and 22, and my husband and myself). They were all spacious enough for all of us and very comfortable. My husband has a bad back and they were very accommodating, piles up extra futons for him. I highly recommend having the evening meal at least once. It was wonderfully prepared and quite a bargain compared to similar type of meals in Kyoto. Make sure you experience the Japanese bath on the first floor. The highlight of staying at this lovely spot is the staff. The women were so welcoming, warm and fun. We received great recommendations on what to see and how to navigate the buses etc. They were very helpful before we even arrived, making dinner reservations for us and promptly answering all questions. We felt like we were taken into their home and hearts by the end of the trip and were so sorry to leave.

Friendly staff, great service, great food, great atmosphere, great location, great everything.

I wasn't so confident about any places I booked before I traveled, but even my picky other half loved the place.

I will definitely recommended this Ryokan to people who aren't so sure where to stay. It's the full experience you will think about the most when you sharing the memory with friends and family.

Thank you for your comment!

As you mentioned, ryokan is very different from hotel.

However, we want everyone to try ryokan when you are coming to Kyoto.
We want you to feel the traditional welcome hearts of Japanese
and it is for sure that you can experience it when you are visiting this Ohanabo.

Please visit us again anytime in the future!

From the moment we entered this ryokan, we were treated like family. We almost wondered if we had previously met some of the staff as they were so warm and welcoming to us. Compared to other ryokans we researched, this one was more affordable. We paid about $280 for the room and a very nice kaiseki dinner that included Wagyu beef and a filling Japanese breakfast. Although we didn’t know exactly what to expect, the food and the staff exceeded our expectations, making this experience well worth the price. The common areas (which was pretty basic) and room were less impressive. Yes, it was comfortable and served our needs. The wifi worked well and the staff came in and out of our room to change it from a daytime sitting room, to a dining room, to a sleeping room. The room was a little warm (we couldn’t control the heat) and opening the window let in a lot of the noise from the main street we faced. Paper screens, for example, were simulated by wallpaper mounted on walls and with frosted glass on the windows. The bathroom was a small inexpensive, plastic prefab module. We did have a small refrigerator which was conveniently for keeping the bottle of sake that we bought for dinner cold. All in all, it was a nice introduction to ryokan style and especially nice for the price. And it was much more interesting than staying in a normal hotel room.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Ohanabo in February 2014. Due to some unfavorable snowy conditions, our time at Ohanabo was cut short to just one night. After a long 24 hour transit, the moment the walked through the door to Ohanabo we were looked after like royalty. The staff were all extremely attentive and they even drove us to a food market because we were short on time! We had a room with a western bath/shower/toilet which was great and the room was beautiful. We had the kaseiki dinner which I would highly recommend and western breakfast the following morning, which was also delicious. The staff and service is a highlight at this beautiful ryokan - always happy, polite and incredibly helpful. Location is good as has been mentioned in previous reviews. Ohanabo has just won another Trip Advisor award and that says enough about this amazing place.

Thank you for staying at Ohanabo and your comment.

It's great you liked our dinner and breakfast.
Western breakfast is good but Japanese style breakfast is delicious as well.

Please try Japanese style breakfast when you are coming back to Ohanabo.

I really enjoyed my stay here. Many aspects of this highly regarded Ryokan are excellent including the service (it's super, super friendly), the meals, the location and the cleanliness. A few items weren't as good as they could be including the wi-fi coverage and the allowing of smoking in the lower lounge area. The service is really amazing, the people working here are so super friendly and they treat you like royalty. The rooms are of good size and reasonably comfortable although sleeping on the floor is what it is. The meals are also a definite highlight. I highly recommend doing the kaiseki dinner one night in your room. The location is an easy 5 minute walk from Kyoto Station which is another major plus.

We spent one night at the Ohanabo Ryokan and it was probably the accommodation highlight of our 3 weeks in Japan. Located not far from Kyoto Station, the location was great. The staff were wonderfully friendly and made us feel at home very quickly. Our room - shared between 4 people, was spacious and very clean with an ensuite bathroom. We enjoyed an amazing dinner that night, and the staff were very accommodating with individual food intolerances and dislikes. It was all beautifully presented and one of the best meals of the trip, absolutely delicious. Breakfast was equally as brilliant. We would highly recommend the Ohanabo to any first time Ryokan people like ourselves, it was genuinely a fantastic experience and we would definitely stay there again.

Thank you for your nice comment.

It's great our ryokan could be the part of your nice memory in Japan.
Yes. We try to be flexible on our foods with guests' dislikes.
Because Japanese food is very different from Western style.

What we serve you as dinner changes with seasons so please
try our all seasons' food.

We are looking forward to seeing you when you are coming back to Kyoto.

I stayed here for one of my nights in Kyoto. I have to stay, after staying here I was actually considering spending the rest of my trip in Kyoto here. The staffs were all very friendly. It feels just like home. Unfortunately the wifi connection in my room was a little bad so I had to come hang out in the lounge for a long time but that was no problem since everyone is very nice and you wouldn't feel any awkwardness. They treat everyone very nicely regardless of the language the guests use .

The food was absolutely delicious and worth the money. I mean, they are on the cheaper end but you can see that they did their food well and everything is nicely presented and delicious. It was such a relaxed day. The breakfast was also perfect, too.

I would also recommend going to the public bath often. If you choose the right time to go, you often won't encounter others. If so, they would often look away so you won't feel too awkward about it.

I guess the only thing I have to complain is: Why didn't I stay for longer?!!

Room Tip: If you can, ask for a room not on the first floor. It has a bad wifi connection. Also, if you pla...
