“Simple and convenient”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

Located 2 mins from the station and near some good bars and restaurants this ryokan offers simple facilities. The staff are very friendly and speak enough English to help you. I stayed in the room with ensuite. The room is basic with futon style bed. There's no food server and an 11pm curfew. However with Kyoto being a great city to explore I was generally asleep early and up early.

Room Tip: 201 is ensuite

the hotel is very close to the railway station and is very conveniently located. one can just walk down to the station in 2 minutes.
the rooms were designed in traditional way, but all the rooms does not have private bath (a downside). The common toilets are very small and does not have a bathroom. even in the rooms that have private bath, the bathrooms are very small
the staff was very average, were reluctant to provide electricity adapters and mobile chargers, this was really troublesome.
Moreover, the hotel's doors are locked from 11 pm to 6 pm, hence one cannot go out or return late to the hotel.
the coffee machine in the lounge was very, one gets a very good brewed coffee in the morning
the mattresses were good and comfortable, the quilt was small for an average person.

Room Tip: try and get the rooms with private bath

I was very pleasantly surprised by this place. Very close to Kyoto station and easy to find with a map (just a couple of small blocks up). The proximity to train and bus makes it a great base for exploring Kyoto - and so handy for dropping off luggage at the start of your stay. Who wants to trail luggage through and unfamiliar city?

The owner doesn't speak a huge amount of English, but perfectly adequate to get by and they are very obliging. Payment was accepted by debit card and the owner was happy to store the luggage until check-in time (and also after check-out for several hours)

It's a proper Japanese place - tatami mats and futon on the floor with towels/yukata provided. There was also a TV so I watched a bit of baseball. I was severely jet-lagged, but slept very well. There's a communal Japanese-style bath, but if you're shy, there's a private shower as well.

It is very close to enormous electrical store Yodobashi - an interesting wander in the evening when you're templed out!

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. For the price it really was excellent, will remember it for next time I'm in Kyoto - thanks!

The Nihonkan Hotel is a budget friendly Japanese style hotel about two blocks from the central train station in Kyoto. Beds are traditional Japanese style mats on the floor. The hotel is clean and simple. The staff are friendly and speak enough English to help with whatever you need. You can pay extra for a room with a private bath or use the communal baths. There is no wi-fi but there is a computer for customer use. There is a "curfew" which states you must be in by 11pm which wasn't problematic as we were tired from sightseeing all day. I would definitely stay there again but would pay extra for the private room which has a bit more space along with its own bathroom.

I stayed a couple nights at Nihonkan ryokan and it was a great place! The staff is super-friendly, going out of their way to help. The room was in typical tatami-floor covered japanese style, with a rice-filled pillow. The shower is a shared room with a japanese-style bath. The only downside was smoke coming either from outside or my neighbour, I'm not quite sure...

I was in Nihonkan ryokan for a night but i had really loved their effort to help also who can't speak fluent japanese. They can speak english, and for a low price (you are in the center of KYOTO!!) you are near all the principal way to visit Kyoto and Japan also. They was very kind and take care of my luggage after i chek-out to let me have a last visit of the city and a good aikido lesson nearby.
Clean bath and a big internet (32inch Sony Bravia) station, near restaurants and shopping places!IF YOU VISIT KYOTO AND WANT A JAPANESE EXPERIENCE;VISIT NIHONKAN ;)

From the outside it looks like a plane house, but in the inside allready from the entrance it looks like a traditional style ryokan. The staff is very friendly, but unfortunately there are some rules like you have to be back before 11pm. and you may only take baths between 7am-9am and 5pm - 10pm. And there are no wifi so you have to use the cabled internet in the communal room. The futons are nice and the pillows are abled to sleep with if you turn them upside down., though if you have a pillow fight you might get a brain concusion if you get hit in the head with them.

Great service and all that 4/5
