Clean room, clean baths- be prepared to walk and use Google Maps

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 4 Nov 2019
This ryokan was very clean and the baths were very well maintained - perhaps to be expected but worthy of mention. We did not eat in and every night they made our futon (sleep on the floor, which is the experience we wanted). Complimentary Japanese tea and sweets, but also a 2L bottle of water every day which was really helpful (although you can drink the tap water safely). The only downside is the location, which is a decent hike away from any station or bus line and there is very little around, including restaurants and even a convenience store is probably an 8-10 minute walk. However, the 100/ 101 Raku bus (google it) is as far as the station and takes you right to the sights, so I would recommend that mode of transport - get a one day bus pass as it will be worth it. We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant but the menu choice was very good, and if you don't have time to walk around to look for somewhere to eat (breakfast was tricky to find) I would suggest booking in your meal, which I believe they do say needs 2 days notice for guarantee. If going to Nijo Castle (which personally is highly recommended) by the time you walk to the station and go the one stop and walk at the other end, you may as well walk the whole thing. And for a bit of a laugh, for cheaper karaoke rates than central Kyoto the Sidax karaoke building is a 10 minute walk.

Great place to stay, a bit away from the main centre - 20 mins walk, but had a JR station nearby.

Clean, friendly, helpful and spoke good English. Definitely recommend.

The hot baths were really nice, didn’t eat here so can’t vouch for the food.

Loved this place for the onsite onsen, although we weren’t very used to sleeping on futon, the quaint Japanese style room was very nice and loved the kimono dressing gown (I’m sure there’s a specific name for them) provided to be used within the ryokan. The tea set with sweets provided were a nice touch and was much appreciated after long day out. It’s 10mins walk to the railway museum, closest train station and around 18mins away from Toji temple which was handy. There weren’t many places for food that we saw, but where we found food they were yummy and onsite restaurant had high quality food also. All in all we were extremely happy with our 2 nights spent at Ryokan Shoei.

This Ryokan was a challenge to find. No meals included (I knew that), but apparently needed a reservation for breakfast...they were "full" for the next day - don't know about dinner (stayed 2 nights). Baths were nothing special compared to others. Staff did not know much English (somewhat a surprise). Not conveniently located- should have done better research.

Room tip: not 329. against an outside wall. Noisy and lights shining through

Ryokan shoei was great. The rooms, the tubs and everything was super clean. They also had a couple of different baths you can use. The staff was very friendly as well. Definitely recommend it and will stay here again next time we’re in town.
