If you base things on how popular places are, then this is a great starter. We turned up to an answer of 10.30pm and had to book two days in advance to get a 6.30pm slot. We were glad that we came back as the 8 course set menu for around 3,800 yen was excellent value. Being at the bar right beside the kitchen was very atmospheric and appeared to be a better choice than being upstairs. All the courses were great and there was a real diversity. Unfortunately we added 4 large beers (around 2,500 yen) and 2 dry sake (3,000 yen but excellent) and ended up with a final bill around 13,000 yen. Well it was our last meal in Kyoto.

For records sake, this place is called GIRO GIRO and NOT Guilo Guilo. We saw this place while walking along the row of restaurants and it was really busy eventhough it was just after 5pm. After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor we decided to try it out. We lucked out and managed to get a reservation for 2 at 8.30pm on a Tuesday night and even then it was really busy when we were there.

It was an 8-course menu for 3680 yen which is reasonably priced. It is definitely up to luck what you happen to get served as they do change their menu regularly. They don't speak a lot of english but the chefs do try their best to explain in english what you are eating. We had a seat at the counter watching the chefs so definitely if you can do try to get a seat downstairs with the chefs. They are amazing as they not only prep and cook everything in a tiniest kitchen you'll ever see, but they also answer the phone, take reservations, take drink orders, serve the food to those at the counter and explain to you what you're eating. And there are only 3 chefs cooking with 2-3 others helping to wash dishes and serve drinks.

The food we had happened to be great. We went with an open mind (which I think you need to have when in Japan because most of the time you have no idea what you're ordering unless you can actually read Japanese) and honestly had a whole bunch of random stuff and they all tasted good - standout dish was a grilled pork with bamboo shoots which was just amazing. One of the more interesting things they served was red snapper (fish) eggs in soup, and even that was really nice. Dessert was a japanese pancake with passionfruit sauce and coconut ice cream.

For us it was just interesting to taste all the different types of food and textures. It's definitely not super high-end fine dining and you should not expect it to be so. For the price you pay it's a pretty nice, casual dining experience with lots of different flavours and it is definitely worth it.

We didn't have any major issues finding it. We were coming from the south (near Gojo Station) and walked up the road next to the river. You can't miss it as the restaurant has really large glass windows and glows at night with a warm orange light. Once you see it, you just need to backtrack and get into the inner lane where the entrance is.

They take reservations even for 10pm so if you're really eager to try it - save your stomach and go for a late night supper!

This place isn't somewhere to eat if you want a friendly welcome or great service. It's not nearly as good as it thinks it is. Needs to try a lot harder to give a good experience to customers.

We had dinner with a group of 5. The english speaking staff was friendly and fun. 13 pieces course with drinks and a genuine old Kyoto atmosphere never failed to surprise and seduce. If you have a chance to book, you might seat at the counter on the main floor and watch the chef's magic. The views from the large windows on the cherry blossom along the river are stunning. It is a wonderful restaurant !

I'm not sure why this is not rankes higher for Kyoto on tripadvisor - definitely the best meal I had in Japan and only cost me $38 USD total. The courses are elegant, refined, delicious, fresh, and beautiful. I would recommend this to anyone without hesitation. Go! Such an amazing experience to watch - definitely ask for seats at the counter.
