There is something spiritual about the place. The pagoda is jaw-dropping!!! The real beauty of the place however lies inside the temples adorned with relics of ginormous Buddha statues, which were considered national treasures by Japan. The best time to enjoy this place is during sakura season.

Toji temple was founded in 796, only three Buddha temples were allowed in the city in that period. Tō-ji and Sai-ji were built at the southern edge of the capital, in the Heian period. Sai-ji disappeared in the 16th century. Chinese influence can be seen in the 21 statues.
In the campus, there is a also a tall 5 storied, 187 feet pagoda, first built in 826, present one 1644. Images of four Budhha are inside the pagoda. It also has associated figures of their 8 followers the Bosatu.

Not a lot of pepole go on this temple. A pity, really close to kyoto station, very impressive statues in the halls, a very beautiful pagoda and the cherry blossoms were at its peak! Really loved it

Knew nothing about this temple - concierge at hotel suggested I visit as it was only a 15 minute stroll from the hotel. What a beautiful temple. The gardens are gorgeous. 5 story pagoda is impressive. Lots to look at around the grounds also. Only a handful of people there too which made it even better. Definitely worth a visit!

Toji is really nice complex of temples with a five-story pagoda. The gardens are - as almost everywhere in Japan - very beautiful full of sakuras, with lots of ponds full of fish - absolutely picturesque. It was chilly on the day we visited so it was not crowded at all. There is also a nice gift shop.
