A truly lovely garden, with winding little pathways leading you up & down from one beautiful scene to the next. We had the subtle 'green' version, with young maple leaves giving colour and shade. Completed with a cup of green tea overlooking the adjacent bamboo grove. (Note: Paths are uneven and steep in places).

Located just at the end of the Bamboo grove, is this tranquil garden surrounding the home of a former Samurai actor. Entry is a bit steep at 1000Y but this deters huge crowds which results in a beautiful garden all to yourself. You get a little ticket which you can trade in for a free tea and cake at the end of your visit. There are exceptional views over Kyoto in one direction and a wonderfully lush valley the other way. Little stepping stones and paths made of shattered roof tiles lead you across a moss garden to a small shrine. In one pavilion you can watch film clips of the actor Okochi Denjiro whose house this was. He looked quite crazy with a slash over one eye.

This is not a site for someone who doesn't want to walk up a pretty steep hillside on a rock step pathway. But for those who don't mind the physical effort, the views from the top of this attraction are about as good as one will find in Kyoto (and that is saying something). There are two specific views that will take your breath away, plus exquisite gardens and greenery along the pathways. There's a tea room halfway up the walk that serves as a nice rest stop before the final walk. And there are few if any crowds who come to see this villa and gardens (another plus).

Oukouchi Denjirou was a famous Japanese movie actor, primarily in the 1930's. His villa, located on a hill in Arashiyama, is surrounded by a lovely garden with a great view of Kyoto City. One only wishes that one could live there as well, far from the madding crowd. Not quite as crowded as some Arashiyama attractions. Admission price includes a Japanese sweet and matcha.

This garden is something special. It should not be underestimated. It is very beautiful and absolute worth visit. Apparently this place was the home of an actor in samurai films.
The variety of threes, the combination of plants and bushes and the view from there over Kyoto is something unique. You do not need to be garden freak to appreciate this.
The entrance ticket covers the garden as well as a cop of (green) tea and cake.
This place fits well to be visited in combination with the Tenryu-ji temple (first) and garden as well as the bamboo grove (the bamboo grove connects the two).
