“A Place Where You Can Feel Zen In Action”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

You don't have to kill yourself running around to temples in Kyoto, or anywhere else for that matter. A few good ones give you the feeling - and this is certainly one where you can sense the beauty of sublime simplicity - elegantly simple wood structures, a few wonderful gardens, a few great paintings and an atmosphere of balance and harmony. All of this proving that, if Zen was not the final answer, it was at least pointing in the right direction.

“Koizumi ceiling painting - vaut le voyage!”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

Peaceful Zen Buddhist shrine with astonishing ceiling painting by Junsaku Koizumi. A documentary film at the entrance to the temple grounds related his career and the 2-year process of painting the ceiling.

“Breathtaking gardens”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

Kenninji claims to be the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto and is one of the Kyoto Gozan or "five most important Zen temples of Kyoto". The temple is a maze of halls and rooms that open onto raked gardens. Painted screens throughout are truly beautiful. The temple was incredibly quiet and peaceful, and not overly crowded early on a Tuesday morning.

“Amazing dragon painting on ceiling”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

The dragons on this zen temple ceiling look different from different angles. The artist painted them elsewhere and sent harm to the temple to hang up on the ceiling. The rest of the grounds are pretty too, especially in spring or autumn.
