I stayed here in a single room while visiting my sister who was staying at Ritusmeikan University. Small room, but very comfortable, mini fridge, nice bathroom, small but adequate TV. The staff spoke very limited English but were very polite. They were doing some work in the lobby that was a little loud, but not during the night hours, and a staff member politely apologized for the inconvenience. I'd definitely stay again!

Hotel Chrysantheme, Kyoto:
Stayed here in early April 2010 because every hotel I enquired on-line was full; even those by third party agencies. I discovered this place on Google earth by clicking on the accommodation icon and checked its on-line info. It is quite small with reasonable price – 5000 yen pppn.
Location: Not bad. Off a busy street just across the road from Hirano shrine. Sakura season was in full swing and it was party time there. Very beautiful indeed. The bus stop is a 3 mins walk away. To catch JR, you need the bus or a very long walk to Enmachi station. The hotel is 2 bus-stops away from Kinkakuji but far from other sights.

Room: Small as usual for Japan. Mattress was hard; shower and toilet is shared between rooms. Ours were on level 2 which were all singles and the toilet in-between was unlocked to make it into a shared-bathroom “twin rooms”. I wonder how it would work if 2 strangers were in single rooms next to each other.

Facilities: Good. Along the corridor in level 2 is a kitchenette with kettle (gas-fired), microwave, fridge, vending machine and sitting room. TV in rooms did not seem to work but we weren’t there for the tv programmes. Wired broadband is free in the rooms. There is no restaurant on-site so it is without breakfast. Coin operated laundry is up in top floor.

Surrounds: Small supermarket just 1 min away on the main road; 7-11 a bit further across the way. Good and inexpensive restaurant by the junction with the main road, “Sato”.

Staff: Only met a lady when we checked in. At other times, there didn’t seem to be anyone in reception. If you need someone just press the door bell across from reception – seems the family lives there on-site.

Overall: Clean, good place to stay if one is on a budget. I would stay there again. Best thing about it: almost deserted; we only saw a couple of other guests. Worst thing: unheated toilet seat!
