“The best budget accomodation”
Reviewed 28 April 2010

We have been stayed in Capsule Ryokan for 3 days and I do believe it is the best budget accomodation I have ever been around the world.
Clean, friendly, high tech and brand new!
Highly suggested

This new-ish establishment in literally 7 minutes away from the Kyoto train station. And has excellent facility considering the space constraints in every part of Japan. It was comfortable to sleep in our own 10 square meter, including luggage storage underneath the tatami surface. Our own shower and electronic toilet (an quintessential Japanese experience) and reverse cycle air conditioner/heater.

The owner Keiji is friendly and extremely helpful with suggestions for sights around Kyoto and is fluent in English. His littel booklet about suggested itinerary and bus/map directions for nearby budget priced eateries.

There is free high speed internet in the lounge area which is also a good place to meet other travellers over a cup of complementary tea/coffee.

Other standard services include laundry and dryer and luggage storage.

Facilities are very clean, well kept and innovative.

There are already plenty of reviews/photos which describe the great faciltiies and location, and I whole-heartedly agree.
Having stayed in a traditional 'men-only' capsule in Osaka for comparison, I enjoyed a really pleasant stay in the dorm-style capsule area for 3 nights - combining the uniqueness of the Osaka experience with a helpful, backpacker-friendly service and very clean modern facilities.
The convenience of the location is the major plus point - for local restaurants (Japanese and Western), ATM, 7/11 stores, city buses, subway, and mainline train services to/from Kyoto station; as well as two should-see shrines within a few minutes walk away.
The number of free services available were really helpful, e.g. tea/coffee, LAN network leads for your laptop, lights, irons, large fridge, etc. and the well put-together folder of useful information really did add value and is well worth the time to read. There are even (free) LAN connections in the capsules for those that have laptops/notebooks.
Japan can be an expensive place to travel for a solo traveller, with very limited 'budget' accommodation options in certain locations. However, whether on a reasonably tight budget, or just keen to sample a uniquely Japanese hotel format, I can think of no reason not to thoroughly recommend this accommodation as a superior budget option.
You won't be disappointed.

The concept of this place is really cool. Though there is little space in the capsule room, it is really something unique and different than a hotel. The little room is used very efficiently. It is located conveniently close to the train station. All parts of Kyoto are easily reachable by metro (which is also close by).
There are many cafès nearby for a quick breakfast, also all kind of eateries for lunch and dinner.
Since the capsule ryokan is new, it is lean&clean! The price is very reasonable compared to the hotels.

Book in advance, because there was no vacancy during our whole stay!
They have great service there:
Many details are well arranged and make you feel comfortable: LAN cable for free internet-access in your room, AC-adapter in your room for your electronic equipment, small street-map of the neighborhood with very helpful recommendations (restaurants, bakery, bank, bus stop, super-market, etc.). And if you have any extraordinary problems (the heater didn`t work in our case) you get friendly assistance at once.
Our double had private bathroom and shower in high-end design, but please notice that the rooms are not very spacious and the shower cabin is in the main room.
Maybe the Capsule team could provide one more storage rack on a wall, then space would be perfectly used.
Last but not least the location is great, because you can reach the Kyoto Station and many other places by foot. All in all we enjoyed our stay very much!

I really enjoyed my stay here in Kyoto. The rooms are small but the space is well used. Tatami mats are on a raised platform giving storage space for your luggage. The shower was amazing with a movable head, rain head and strong side ways jets. Be warned, the shower is not very private as it is in the main room; the glass is opaque but showerers are still visible. Location is excellent-convenient to both the train station and sightseeing.

This was one of the best decisions we made in our whole trip in Japan. Capsule Ryokan is close to the train station and some of the nicest eateries around. We were warmly welcomed by Nek san upon check-in. The place was spotless and the room was an innovation in itself -- compact yet very functional. Underneath the beds was sufficient space for our luggage. There were soft futon beds. And the monsoon shower was amazing. Only and minor downside would be the occasional noise from the road; but nothing to complain about. Kudos to you guys and would recommend this place to friends.
