“Absolutely Amazing and Perfect Location”
Reviewed 13 April 2016 for a stay in March 2016

An absolutely amazing rental! Very pleasant and comfortable with a stunning traditional decor. So many sights and activities within close walking distance including a subway station making the rest of Kyoto just as accessible. Be prepared, the stairs are very steep (so this place is not for anyone with knee issues); there's more traditional Japanese seating on the ground than western seating (really only two comfortable western seats); and tall people must be cautious due to a lot of low hanging spots (though that's not much different from many places in Japan). Even considering those slight negatives (they are manageable for the most part), overall the place was truly wonderful and I would definitely stay there again.

Dear JA12345678,

Thank you for taking the time to write us a review of your stay in our "Anzu-an" machiya house! We are pleased to hear that you were able to take advantage of your machiya houses's location during your visit to Kyoto. As you have pointed out, there are many traditional architectural features within this machiya house that guests (who are used to Western-style houses) may find surprising. The steeper stairs, tatami-floor seatings, and lower entranceways -- however, we hope that all of these charming features were able to add to your experience living in an authentic Kyoto house! You and your guests were truly a pleasure to have at "Anzu-an", and we look forward to welcoming you back to Kyoto in the very near future.

Kind Regards,
The Machiya Residence Inn Kyoto Staff

Thank you for all of your lovely comments about the Kohaku-an machiya. We are happy to hear that you were able to enjoy your stay and fully experience everything that Kyoto has to offer. Although machiya properties are not typically very large, it is a perfect accommodation for smaller groups of people who wish to fully immerse themselves in Kyoto’s rich culture. It was our pleasure welcoming you, and we hope that you will stay at Kohaku-an again during any future visits!

Sincerely,
The Staff Members at Machiya Residence Inn

Thank you for staying at Kohakuan with your family. Although there is no concierge service, our offices are conveniently located near Kyoto Station, enabling us to respond immediately to any requests from our guests on a daily basis. Additionally, we offer guests a mobile phone at Kohakuan during their stay, which can immediately connect guests to our staff. We are more than happy to make reservations for guests for restaurants, offer tour guide suggestions and information, as well as answer any other questions guests may have. We hope that you will choose to stay at Kohkuan again on your next visit. We look forward to better serving your needs then.

“Perfect traditional townhouse with all the mod cons as well!”
Reviewed 4 December 2012 for a stay in November 2012

We loved our stay at this Machiya. It is very small but well laid out to make the most of the space. The Manager (Hiro) is very friendly and helpful to assist you with any special requests (e.g. local restaurants and a local playground for our 2 yr old). We loved our stay. However, you need to want to stay in a non-touristy part of Kyoto which means most people in eateries etc in the area do not speak English and many places are not open late.

“A great little place offering a chance to live like the locals”
Reviewed 4 December 2012 for a stay in November 2012

A great place thats not too far from the main attractions and Gion. Easy to find and in a lovely location for local shopping and food. Amenities in the house were good and there was a lovely feel to the place - really making the stay feel local. A welcome change to staying in a hotel.

“2 thumbs up for Kohakuan Kyoto Machiya”
Reviewed 19 November 2012 for a stay in November 2012

5 of us visited Kyoto and spent 4 nights in this machiya. We opted for this local accommodation because we wanted a place where the 5 of us can be together and didn't want to be pigeon-holed into your typical hotel room.
First impression, it looks like an old Japanese storehouse but inside, it is totally clean and complete with all the modern amenities that you will ever need, plus complete privacy.
It can sleep 6 persons comfortably with 2 rooms upstairs for 4 persons and a living room downstairs that can put out futon mattresses for 2 more persons.
It comes with 1 complete bathroom with shower facilities, and a smaller bidet. There is a washing machine / dryer, small kitchenette and full size fridge.
Overall, the stay is very pleasant and the neighborhood is quiet at night. I strongly recommend this place for any group of people visiting Kyoto as it is only 1 station away, Tofukuji Station (about 10 mins walk to the machiya) to Kyoto Station.

“The Perfect place in Kyoto”

The Machiya Townhouse is the perfect place to stay in Kyoto. We had a family of five(2 teens and 1 8 yr old) and this townhouse allowed us to experience how Japanese people live. A hotel would've required two or more rooms which we didn't want and it would've been much more expensive. The Townhouse was very clean and had many amenities. The kitchen was equipped enough that we cooked/brought in food several times. Two bathrooms was an absolute necessity. The bathrooms were very clean with plenty of hot water for two teenage girls. The luxury toilets were fun to try(warm seats, european bidet). Our location was ideal for catching the train or bus and walking distance to many stores(bakery, grocery...). The only negative was the Red Cross hospital(ambulances at night) and the busy street(ambulances again). Also provided was wifi, PC, cell phone to contact Hiro, maps, easy directions to get there, umbrellas and AC units in every room.
Hiro was the perfect host getting us situated and providing many details for us. A keypad entry system allowed us to come in very late at night.
I only wish we could've taken this place to Tokyo with us too!
