“michelin at it's best”
Reviewed 6 November 2012

Everything was freshly prepared in front of you with finesse and delicacy. There was prob abt light 15 course of small but delicately prepared dishes. They serve traditional kaiseki dinner and we highly recommend it if you have the pocket and time for it as it lasted almost 2 1/2 hours. We sat by the counter which is more fun than in a room but you can request for it if you are in larger group of 4 and above. You can choose the menu you wish, see their website but you need to get yr hotel concierge to make reservations. After dinner, you can walk the busy gion street and into the side walk ways for geisha spotting.

“3 stars from us too!”
Reviewed 2 September 2012

We found this through the Michelin guide having been awarded 3 stars. It really is a tiny place, all about the food - no pretentiousness or flashiness here. Has a traditional air about it. No separate bar area or anything.

The staff were very welcoming and ushered us to our seats at the bar. We had chosen the b kaisaiki dinner for about 20000 yen. We were presented with a series of spectacular dishes - I think we should have taken a note of them all. Beautiful crockery. We went for a special sake which was lovely. Perfect food, served surprisingly quickly. Personally I would prefer a dessert rather than orange juice but it was very good juice! The staff were very kind and coped with us not being able to speak much japanese.

Thank you Chihana for a lovely dinner!

“Very disappointing”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

Just got back from Chihana. Totally overpriced and over-rated. Cannot understand how it was awarded three stars. Compared to, say, El Celler de Can Roca, it reaches knee-height.

“Best Japanese food in Kyoto?”
Reviewed 5 November 2011

What a find! The set lunch menu was delicious -- each dish is uniquely crafted, yet there's no pretension. After all, you're likely to be sitting at the counter. Recently earning three Michelin stars, the restaurant changes it set menu daily, serving the best of the best. The menu today had really traditional ingredients - black beans, gingko nuts, yuzu, yuba, homemade tofu and "fu," nori paste served on mountain potato, fresh seasonal fish, and more. If you are a fan of Japanese cuisine, this restaurant will define Kyoto cooking for you. Prices reflect the artistry of the cuisine, and I'd suggest trying lunch here as a first experience, since the price is reasonable (10,000 yen each) considering the amazing quality of ingredients and sensational yet subtle flavors.

“Astonishing quality of food”
Reviewed 7 September 2010

We had a Kaiseki dinner at Chihana this summer and, while our expectations were very high, the restaurant didn't fail at any level.

The restaurant offers 6 different prices for the Kaiseki dinners. The amount of dishes doesn't change between the price alternatives, only the ingredients used varies.

The food was of exceptional quality and carefully presented. The chef was able to conjure pure tastes of difficult ingredients and it was no surprise that the restaurant had received full three Michelin stars.

As neither of us spoke Japanese, we had asked our hotel's concierge to book us a table in advance and making a reservation is very much recommended as the restaurant customizes the dinner based on guests' preferences.

It is quite difficult to find the restaurant as it is hidden in a long and narrow corridor starting on Shijyo street so printing the map from their web page or marking the exact location on a map is a good idea.

The staff was very friendly and they were eager to explain the contents of different courses to us in English, which was a positive surprise considering they only accept reservations in Japanese.

The restaurant accepts major credit cards for dinners but if you plan to enjoy their offerings during lunch time, be prepared to pay in cash only. The prices are somewhat ridiculous but that is kind of expected from a top-end restaurant such as Chihana.
