Almost relaxing and satisfied

Review of Aman Kyoto
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 23 Dec 2022via mobile
What i love here:
- Location. Is peaceful , by the mountain .
- Landscape simple natural. Nothing special, but relaxing
- Room is nicely decorated, good quality material, amenities, skin care set .
- main Restaurant is nice , delicious and cozy
What make me disappointed:
- Small SPA AND VIEW from the spa . Its not about size, it’s about managing space and view .. Relaxing area for tea after Spa not relaxing and too small
- I really missed some chair or something to stop, seat during the walk in the park and enjoy .. because only one place where you can get tea or snacks is the main restaurant ..
i saw you have few pavilions on the hill for the rooms , why there cannot be Spa? Because view from the rooms to be honest almost the same .
- Need more trees to cover public road for the cars.. its make us feel that we still not in deep forest as you advertised. Its also not very private

When I just checked in, I was amazed by the autumn leaves of Aman Kyoto. The overall green vegetation was well maintained. When I checked in, Atsushi-San, the general manager of Aman, came to introduce the history of Aman Kyoto. It is indeed Aman, choose The address is still outstanding.

The setting of the hotel is still very good, it is in line with Aman's standards, and the service level is also very good, but it can still be improved. The ingredients are very good and fresh, and they are all selected from local ingredients in Kyoto.

Aman Kyoto covers a huge area. I spent a few hours and didn't finish visiting all of them. It is also very beautiful to take a walk and enjoy the autumn leaves in the autumn leaf season in November.

Room tip: No Gym and Swimming Pool Public spring pool limit 3 adults, Not open for kids Kids need private spring pool

Beautiful and very unique place; stunning garden and great bedroom. A little bit disappointed by the lack of outside space to rest, read, the relax and appriciate the gardens.
No fitness or even a place to practice yoga. No swimming pool... so nothing to do there just walking in the garden.

The food is also a bit simple and not the level expected for Aman. The breakfast also are not incredible for Aman Hotel and the price we paid... For foreigners guests the breakfast need to be more european and generous ! It's like japanese one or if you choose the western one a simple brown toast and a small croissant ! Even just a slide of a kiwi !!!!

Also no welcoming cakes or chocolates or anything on the room... just so surprising !

When we arrive in the hotel, the team was light and not any particular welcoming just 3 minutes with someone in the reception... After 20 hours of travel we are expected some cakes or kind of sweets in the room, a warm welcoming from the Manager or director of the hotel !

Aman Kyoto. The forgettable zen experience in Kyoto Japan. I stayed in room 08. My morning felt like a gigantic art picture in front of me. The onsen spring was super relaxing. Top-notch amenities with Marvis toothpaste set and high quality details everywhere. The outdoor area with fireplace, I can sit there all day to feel the amazing nature in total green. Picture and video can’t describe enough how beautiful it was. You must hear about all the history of how this place was created from general manager Mr. Akira Shiota, it will touch your heart and appreciate even more of this gem in Kyoto.

Room tip: Choose a room on the 2nd floor

We really enjoyed our stay. The staff were warm, gracious and promptly tended to our every needs. They also have plenty of foreign staff members, so if you can't speak Japanese, there won't be a problem here. Overall, service is very Aman-like. One example - my mother-in-law is currently a bit physically challenged in terms of walking, but wanted to check out the property grounds. Problem is, the walkways are all cobblestones (and with climbing involved.) No problem! One of the wonderful young ladies ran off, grabbed a golf cart, and promptly gave her (and us) a 30-minute tour of the Aman Kyoto grounds - at least in the areas where a golf cart can actually traverse.

Speaking of property grounds, Aman Kyoto's is a real stunner. It's expansive, and the most-covered forest is mystical and serene. We definitely felt relaxed as soon as we stepped foot in Aman Kyoto. It's not your typical city hotel (Aman Tokyo, I'm looking at you.) You'll feel like you're miles away from civilization.

We had dinner one night at Taka-An, and I must say that - as a kaiseki aficionado - it was right up there with the best that Kyoto has to offer (in case you're curious, we've been to almost all of the top ones, including Kishisen and Kitcho multiple times.) In fact, many of the chefs at Taka-An were formerly employed at Kitcho, and it shows in the quality of their offerings. Each dish was exquisite. Definitely the best meal we've had at any Aman, although it does come at a cost (about $400 per person with some sake.)

On to the rooms. Since we had Mrs. KI-NRT's mother with us, we booked two rooms. And, with her mother having mobility issues, we took the 1F "Nara" room (for her) and the 2F "Kaede" room (for us.) Our room was directly above hers. Two things to note:
- All "standard" rooms (there are different categories of them, but it's mainly differentiated by location and floor) are 60 square meters, which is a bit on the small side when you consider the size of the overall property. Lighting is good, however, and the decor and colors of the walls give it an airy feel. While it's not claustrophobic, it's not exactly the kind of room you'd want to spend all day in.
- All standard rooms on the first floor have privacy issues (at least as far as I'm aware), since they face the pathways. Yes, the surrounding trees do prevent a clear view into (and out of) the rooms, but there are enough openings such that, if you have the lights on and shades open, pedestrians will get a view into the room. Therefore - definitely opt for a room on the second floor if you opt for anything other than the suite (of which they only have one category, if you don't count the stand-alone, 2BR Washigamine Pavilion.)

A note about the location. Kyoto is a relatively compact "large" city; however, many of the top sites are quite spread out. Aman is close to Kinkakuji, Ryoan-ji (the famous zen rock garden) and Ninnaji. It is not close to most other places, and is not near touristic hot spots like Gion or Arashiyama. If you're a first-timer to Kyoto and the main objective is to blitz through all of the main sites and have the city experience, then perhaps Aman would not be the best choice. If you intend to spend more than a few days in Kyoto, and intend to take it slow, then Aman ought to shoot towards the top of anyone's list.

At this very moment, Aman is #1 for us in Kyoto. We have a second home in Japan (where we're remote working), have a car, and live only an hour away from Kyoto. And, especially right now, our biggest priority is in choosing properties that are more intimate (for better social distancing.) I also like the Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton, but less so than Aman, especially at this moment in time.

Room tip: If you want privacy, and are unwilling to spring for one of the suites or villas, opt for a regular room on the 2nd floor (i.e. Kaede.)

Went to the hotel by taxi from the nearest station.
A bit far away from city so you can enjoy the relax environment in it.

The food is good and the place is nice.

Just most of the areas is limited for guest so cannot fully enjoy it.
