“Loved our stay”
Reviewed 30 June 2018 for a stay in June 2018

We absolutely loved staying at this Machiya house. The reservation and check in process was easy and the staff incredibly helpful and quick to reply, even pointing out great places to go, finding vegetarian restaurants for my daughter and making reservations for us. The location is fantastic and the house itself so charming and restful. I highly recommend it!

“Wonderful authentic experience, very well located.”
Reviewed 13 December 2017 for a stay in December 2017

Excellent location in Gion, walking distance to several major temples and Nishiki market. Also close to Keihan rail line for the Fushimi shrine.

This residence is a welcome change from a standard hotel, a great taste of tradition with modern amenities.

Communication with the operators was good, and Erika gave us great restaurant recommendations and helped us to find some sake we enjoyed.

For this property I'd bring earplugs as it can be noisy at night. Worth it though!

“In the heart of Gion”
Reviewed 19 September 2017 for a stay in September 2017

Wishing we could have doubled our four night stay in this little gem in the heart of Gion. An easy walk to the major sites in Higashiyama and Gion, plus major shopping areas. Kyoto's metro is easy to work out, making access to major sites like Fushimi Inari Shine, Nijo Castle etc from Gion Shijo a breeze. Plus there are a couple of convenience stores around the corner so you can whip up a few home cooked meals easily if you feel like it. There are plenty of restaurants close by too. Tip: we enjoyed a dinner st Hanamachi just down the street.

The staff at Machiya Residence Inn are very helpful and accommodating. Their representative visited us on check in and told us about how things worked in the house She also gave us a location map with restaurants suggested by the staff. We had a problem with the upstairs toilet and Machiya House Inn were straight onto it.

The house had just about everything including nice coffee, two beautiful bathtubs (one with TV and remote) and best of all provides visitors to Kyoto a chance to live in a traditional Machiya style house with mod cons. Only things lacking were a kitchen plug (handy if you want to wash up after making your own eggs on toast for breakfast) and western style pillows (but then we elected to sleep on futons in the traditional Japanese way so don't feel it's right to complain). One more thing, if you are a light sleeper and not use to the hustle and bustle of city life you might want to consider a quieter location as this area can be a little busy at night.

Enjoy!

Ps: if you book and can't find the house just ask a local. They are very lovely and helpful!

“Most awesome location, very traditional and comfortable townhouse.”
Reviewed 15 April 2016 for a stay in March 2016

This place exceeded all of our expectations. The host was very adaptive and accommodating. The location was perfect, midway between Gion and the east temple complex. The facility was very comfortable, with all necessary amenities, extra toiletries, plenty of clean towels and bedding, and that very functional, restrained Japanese vibe. Lovely internal viewing garden. Also, very easy to use mechanical / electronic systems and locks.

We immediately fell in love with it and it was definitely a highlight of our trip to Japan. Our 13 year old daughter loved the upstairs wooden tub (though we all had at least one go in it).

Dear Stephen,

Thank you for your review and kind words regarding your stay in our "Gion Koyu-an" machiya house. We are so pleased to hear that you not only enjoyed the location of this house (as you have pointed out, near Gion & the Eastern-side of Kyoto), but also the facilities and amenities provided. The upstairs wooden tub is a traditional machiya feature -- we are glad that everyone was able to utilise it at least once. Again, thank you for taking the time to write us a review. It was a pleasure having you stay with Machiya Residence Inn, and we look forward to seeing you again in the future!

Kind Regards,
The Machiya Residence Inn Kyoto Staff

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Gion Koyu-an machiya and that everything was to your liking. Our staff members were more than happy to assist you! The location of this machiya is, as you have said, ideal for visitors. It is close to many of Kyoto's popular sightseeing attractions, and right in the center of Gion, a famous Geisha district. We hope that you were able to visit many attractions during your stay, and hope to see you in Kyoto again soon!

Sincerely,
The Machiya Residence Inn Staff

“Charming house ideally located”
Reviewed 7 July 2014 for a stay in July 2014

Wonderful property right in the heart of Gion on a quiet, residential alley - you really feel like a local staying there! The Machiya has been beautifully restored in traditional manner but also has been tastefully updated to include all the modern comforts (plus a more-than-adequate kitchen (fridge, microwave, induction burner, sink) if you want to pick up some local products and cook). Downstairs is kitchen, living room (w iPad/wifi provided for free), bathroom, separate room with sink and toilet, and a beautiful little Japanese garden. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms - one with twin beds and the other a tatami room with table for eating and futons for sleeping (my son loved eating tatami style!). Location is incredible - 3 minute walk to nearest subway (Kaisen line); municipal subway stop is about 5 minutes walk away. Pontocho is 5 minutes away; Takashiyama and other big shopping stores are about 7 to 10 minutes walk. Nishiki market is about 12 to 15 minutes walk. Surrounded by Gion. Great price point as well considering the size (much, much more spec than standard hotel room) quality, style and location. Style-wise the property seemed very similar to a ryokan except that there is no staff to help you on site (though very helpful by email and at office location near train station; staff easily made multiple restaurant reservations) and no meals included (which we did not mind as we wanted to explore Kyoto's amazing restaurants and depachikas without being tied to ryokan meal plan) and of course far less expensive than ryokan. We feel like we got a true taste of Kyoto and all it's charms for a very reasonable price.

Thank you for your review. We are glad that you were able to enjoy your
stay in Gion Koyuan and experience living in a traditional Kyoto machiya with
modern conveniences. The bedroom on the second floor can situate up to 4
futons mattresses, so that our guests can truly immerse themselves in the
Japanese lifestyle. It is one of our more ideally located houses in terms
of access to major tourist attractions, so we are glad to hear that you
were able to take full advantage of the location. Although there are
differences in service compared to a traditional ryokan, the staff here are
always willing to help book a restaurant or recommend a good souvenir shop.
Thank you again, and we hope to see you back in Kyoto!

“Great family rental”
Reviewed 25 June 2014 for a stay in April 2014

We had a wonderful stay at Machiya Townhouse. The house was clean and in the best location. We traveled with our family including 3 small children. There was a total of two bedrooms upstairs and that could sleep 6. For larger groups there is two rooms downstair where extra people could sleep.

The Japanese bathtub was a special treat, it was like having our own onsen in our house.

The rental company even let us store our bags at their office so we could enjoy a full day at Kyoto before leaving for Osaka.

I can't wait to come back and stay again.
