Great hotel, lovely staff and above all excellent location. Within walking distance to shopping and cultural sites. Will definitely stay again! Rooms are large and clean. Excellent bakery downstairs for breakfast.

From the Kyoto train station it is a short 1400 Yen taxi ride to the hotel. You can also go by subway although with heavy luggage that would be quite an ordeal because you have to change subway lines.

The hotel is in a very nice location close to Gion and Pontocho in an area with a lot of restaurants and great transportation options to many places of interest.

The hotel itself is ok, Our room had excellent beds, was clean but small with little room for luggage. The design of the interior was a little bland. Because of its good location I would usually rate this hotel a "4".

However, we were put off a few times by the front desk. We arrived 45 minutes before regular check in time and they didn't even try whether our room was ready. We requested for assistance with finding a restaurant. They gave us the English names of the restaurants but these restaurants didn't have English signs so it took us a long time finding the restaurant. Furthermore they offer day passes for the bus. However when I wanted to pay with creditcard because we were short on cash, this was not possible. A little more cooperation from the front desk would have made things easier for us.

We were there during the big Kyoto festival called Gion Matsuri. It is nice to see the parade on July 17th, but what really amazed us were the festivities in the streets in the evenings prior to the parade. It is such a great atmosphere in the center. The hotel is located close to all the events which can be a reason to select this hotel when you are in town for Gion Matsuri.

We liked this small hotel very much. On checking we were given a sheet of A3 with lots of helpful suggestions and information about the hotel and area in English. We didn't use the laundry room but apparently you don't need to add detergent to your loads, it is added automatically. I've never heard of that before. The room was fine for three of us, particularly as we didn't have much luggage. The shower was excellent. There is a western supermarket next door and cafés all around the hotel so finding food was easy. It was a short walk to all sorts of shopping and sights. All in all it is an excellent place to stay.

We loved our stay. Hotel has a chic feel, is modern, has English speaking staff and nice rooms. We even had a very spacious shower, rooms must be recently refurbished because everything seems new. Great location close to the famous restraint district Pontocho and a metro station. Also right next to the hotel is lovely Salvatores pizzeria that has very exciting all you can eat pizza and salads and pasta lunch offer that costs you only around 10 dollars.

The Royal Park Hotel Kyoto is a sleek boutique hotel set in the heart of Kyoto's restaurant district. Room views are nondescript: the tops of nearby commercial buildings. But the lobby is tres chic and the staff attempt to create a high-end boutique service atmosphere. The hotel is definitely "corporate boutique," not "charming boutique," but they do a nice job. One funny indication of the hotel's international aspirations: all signs are in English with Japanese subtitles (rather than the other way around).

The hotel has solid free internet access and a coin-operated laundry (very convenient!).

Rooms are very comfortable. Our bathroom had a semi-rain shower: an overhead shower but pressurized rather than high-flow. You can turn both the overhead and angled shower heads on at the same time for a nice drenching. Shower areas are large and roomy, not stalls. Our room also had a tub.

Staff English skills are as usual in Japan (poor but passable) but during our stay there was one North American staff member on hand who was a native English speaker.

Overall, this is a very comfortable hotel. Restaurants and shopping are right outside the door, with lots of cafes, etc. The (discreet) nightlife district is also just half a block away. It is hard to imagine a more centrally located tourist hotel in Kyoto. Note, however, that most of Kyoto's most attractive tourist sites are not in the city center. You have to take a taxi to Kyoto station and then a train for many of them. There is a subway line two blocks from the hotel, but it does not go directly to Kyoto station; a change of trains is required.

Just got home from a 3-night stay at the hotel and trying not to fall asleep before 6 pm. We stayed in 2 adjoining rooms. The rooms are indeed rather small, but most hotel rooms in Japan are very compact. Love the location, close to Sanjo subway station, Nishiki market, Shijo where major department stores such as Daimaru and Takashimaya are, as well as the Gion district. Right outside of the hotel, there are many restaurants, convenience stores, various shops, etc. it is at the heart of the actions. The hotel is very chic and contemporary. The rooms are well-equipped, every nook and cranny is well used. It has a small open closet right by the door. My only gripe is that the doors joining the rooms did not have anything to hold it open, so we had to prop it open with our luggage, thus crowding up the little space in front of the entrance, bathroom and adjoining doors, making it impossible for more than one person to be passing. Other than that we have no complaint. The wifi worked great, so did the AC. It has a fridge and a safe that can fit a laptop. The bathroom was stocked with various toiletries such as hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor (his and hers), shower cap, q-tips, etc. The staff was very professional, helpful and very polite. They helped us call a taxi, directed us to various attractions, and gave great advice on transportation. The staff was very responsive. One evening, our safe would not open so we called the front desk, within 5 minutes, someone came up to help us.
We did not eat at the hotel, we prefer to eat at nearby restaurants. The bakery right outside of the hotel seemed really great. There is marketplace with a myriad of shops and restaurant and covered walkway just across the street. A word of advice if you go to Nishiki market, it does not open till way past 9. We went at 9 and they were still preparing. If you go, keep going till the end of the market, turn left and you will end up at Daimaru department store. Don't miss the basement where the food hall is. Wow, what a display of gourmet foods all beautifully packaged. You can also find bento boxes and sushi/sashimi packages.

Room Tip: Stayed on 4th floor and loved the street view, we sat by the window watching the street below us. A...

I absolutely loved this modern boutique hotel in Kyoto. The rooms are very small but very clean and modern. I stayed with family in Standard Twin and Deluxe Twin rooms, which are basically identical except that the Deluxe Twin rooms had a nicer view (street view, instead of view of the neighbouring building), and the bathroom in the Deluxe Twin was twice the size, with an amazing stand-up shower and separate soaker tub.

The service was friendly and very helpful, with front desk staff doubling as concierge and making helpful restaurant suggestions, giving directions, etc. All the front desk staff spoke English well enough that we had no difficulties communicating.

The best part of this hotel is the amazing location. It is a block from a major train station, Shiyakusho-mae, and across the street from Sanjo-dori Shopping Arcade, an outdoor mall with shops and restaurants. We loved the little French bakery next door for breakfast. Best of all it is a half block away from Pontocho Alley which is full of quaint restaurants along the Kamogawa canal. It is a quick 5-10 minute walk to Gion, and a great base for exploring the Eastern side of Kyoto.

This was the perfect hotel, and the price was amazing.
