“Stylish and comfortable traditional house”
Reviewed 21 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

I rented this house with 3 friends and we all loved it. It is a very traditonal, super cute, very clean, comfortable and stylish little house. The staff was helpful and we had all the commodities in the house (including wifi). I would definitely recommend it to my friends.

“Our family Machiya Kyoto stay”
Reviewed 8 April 2014 for a stay in March 2014

What a wonderful way to experience real Kyoto. This house has been restored to its true Machiya glory. We where a family of 6 adults and one child. We enjoyed the two story home so much for our two night stay. Location is good, can reach places by foot or by taxi. The set up allows for 4 bedrooms, 3 using tatami and futons and one with western bedding. A well appointed kitchen allows for breakfast to be made at home and a great bathroom with ofuro and separate shower. Wifi, TV, laptop and mobile phone are all there. Linens are provided and daily maid service. Full size bathroom amenities offered. The style is traditional with modern elements - AC, heating, shoji screens, modern lighting and over all a very comfortable place to call home when in Kyoto and allowed the family space when they needed and a nice seating area to be enjoyed communally.
We would book this place again when we visit Kyoto and for families or groups looking for a great option for accommodation once should consider this over a hotel and or smaller ryokan.

We are incredibly pleased to hear that you enjoyed your machiya experience. Families often stay here so we try to equip the place with as many modern amenities and comforts from home while at the same time remaining faithful to the deeply traditional aspects of a machiya. Thank you for recommending this place to other families and large groups. We are looking forward to your next visit and hope that we can make your stay an even more enjoyable one.

“Unique experience of modern meets tradition in Japan”
Reviewed 17 January 2014 for a stay in December 2013

Since Kyoto is known as a Japanese cultural hub, my friends and I decided to stay in a machiya (traditional Japanese townhouse) as opposed to a ryokan, where there are strict rules and you cannot make much noise.

This machiya had plenty of room for 6 of us. The rooms were spacious by Japanese standards. The architecture was neat and luxurious, exactly like the pictures on the website. It was also great to have wifi, phone access to English speaking operators and a book with tourist destination recommendations and directions! Also provided with a washing machine.

From Kyoto Station it was approx 15 min travel plus 10 min on foot, but how often would you go in groups large enough to stay in a machiya? I personally found it worthwhile.

Thank you for your valuable feedback. As you have stated, this machiya is quite spacious and offers more privacy than a ryokan, or traditional Japanese inn. It is also in a great location with easy access to Gion, Kawaramachi area and Nijo Castle. Nishiki Market is also within walking distance and a great place for dining out. We hope that you will choose to stay here or one of our smaller machiyas should you come to Kyoto again but with a smaller group.

All the best.

“Wonderful traditional townhouse, with modern upgrades”

This townhouse in a quiet, but central area of Kyoto was an absolute dream house for my family visiting Japan for the first time. The traditional layout with tatami mats was like something out of the movies, while the modernized bathroom, kitchenette, washing machine, and air conditioning were very much appreciated. There were a total of 3 bedrooms, which was quite adequate for our group of 6 people. The full bathroom with shower and bath, plus another toilet in another room, was quite adequate for our group (it seems that traditional small townhouses with more than one full bathroom are nearly non-existent). The location was very convenient, being a 15 or 20 minute walk to the main shopping street, restaurants, convenience stores, and subway station, and taxis were always cruising the streets. The management company was very accommodating and quick to answer any questions we had. We were totally happy with this rental and would recommend it to any group who want to experience something closer to traditional Japanese living than offered by a hotel.

Liked best: The traditional atmosphere, and the very central location.
Liked least: Some of the modern appliances lacked English instructions, so there was some trial-and-error fumbling around.

We are incredibly happy to hear that your family enjoyed your stay here, particularly since it was your first visit to Japan and Kyoto. As you have so kindly explained, this machiya offers a one-of-a-kind experience of what it is like to stay in a traditional Japanese house that you can’t experience at a hotel. The modern amenities like the washing machine and wi-fi, also helps to ensure that guests will have a comfortable stay. We hope you will visit Kyoto and stay here again sometime soon. We look forward to accommodating you then.

Warmest wishes,

Machiya Residence Inn staff.

“We Love This Ryokan!”
Reviewed 27 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013
2
people found this review helpful

This is a modern ryokan, that we had very much enjoyed our stay.
It is double-storey with bedrooms on second level.
1 of the bedroom, with futons only. The other bedroom with 2 big western beds (Queen size beds).
We were very thrilled staying in this modern ryokan for 3 nights.

But for location, if walking is alright for you.
It is about 8mins walk to the bus-stop. Walking north of Machiya.

And also about 8mins walk to the subway station, Shijo. Walking west of
Machiya. You need a map at first.

If you have the patience of walking, another 5 more mins walk from Shijo station exit 6 (without heavy luggages), it will lead you to the Karasuma area
(Hankyu line), where Daimaru Department Mall is located. That whole street is lined with retail shops, restaurants & cafes. (shops generally close at 830pm. But there are 1-2 cafes & 24-hr MacDonalds, for you to have late night supper or a cup of coffee)

At the other end of that street (about 15mins walk further down), is Kawaramachi station & Nishiki market.

In short, a lot of walking in Kyoto. Alternatively, you can get a CitiBus All-Day
Pass at 500Y for adult, half price for children, free for children below 6.

To get to Machiya Shoubuan, we got lost on the first day, ended up with much longer walk than necessary. Reason being, we got overwhelmed by the numerous signs in the station - 20 over exits, and we got out of station via wrong exit 6 in Karawamachi station (instead of Shijo station).

To get to Machiya Shoubuan, when you are at Shijo station ticketing gantry,
turn LEFT (we turn right by mistake).
You will see a confectionery shop.

Walk through the narrow path in the station, and out of the station thru exit 5.
The owner advised exit 6. But in underground, exit 5 is easier to spot.

Out of exit 5, walk towards the traffic light & cross the road (there is a police station on your right hand side - to counter check if you are on the right track)

But continue to walk straight ahead, walking past the petrol station, into a
quieter neighbourhood.
If you see a Family Mart on the way, you are on the right track.

Continue walking, until you see the Machiya as shown in the picture, on your
left hand side, opposite the street you are walking.

It is about 1-2 traffic light junctions after Family Mart.

There are 2 Machiya lookalike houses next door.
But Machiya Shoubuan is the one with a blue curtain, and a security lock.

Enjoy the stay!

“Great family accommodation in a Japanese style setting!”
Reviewed 29 April 2013 for a stay in April 2013

people found this review helpful

My family of four with two teenage boys just got back from our vacation in Japan. The highlight of our 11 days trip traveling from Tokyo, Osaka, Nara and Kyoto was our 2 nights stay in the Shoubuan Machiya Residence Inn. We consider this as a great alternative from the usual hotel accommodations having to get the feel of the traditional Japanese style setting but with the modernized amenities. It was a good decision for us to experience such which I feel is a perfect compliment to a more laid-back city filled with so much culture and beauty.

It is conveniently located near a Family Mart, public bath, the Shijo subway station along the Shijo street which I think is the main street, a few steps further is the subway elevator found in one of the buildings, Starbucks, convenience store, a bakery, about 10-15 min walk to Nishiki Market, Daimaru department store with take out food found on the basement (bakery that goes 30% off after 6pm), Ippudo Ramen Noodle restaurant and J Cycle bike rental store to name a few.

We arrived in Kyoto passed 10am from Osaka with our luggage and planned to tour the place right away so we opted to avail of the very efficient luggage delivery service located within the train station for convenience as per advise of Hiro -san the Property Manager and paid 750yen/luggage. Along the way there were lockers for rent in case you are there for the day and plan to move around with less things to carry.

By the time we got to the Machiya Inn it was around 5pm and our luggage was already in the house as expected. We were overwhelmed seeing how traditional the ambiance was and we excitedly checked out the place. The ground floor had a kitchen with appliances all concealed in the cabinet etc., a zen bathroom with shower and tub, living room/dining room with a Japanese style table good for 4- 6 pax, flat screen tv, ipod dock/clock and laptop overlooking a pocket garden which can sleep 2 pax max on futons. The other room housed a concealed toilet and washer/drier which can sleep 2-3 pax max. The second floor had to two rooms one of which I can consider the master's bedroom with two American standard double size beds which can sleep 4 pax max. The other room can sleep around 3 pax. Both the American style beds and the futons were so comfortable that we slept so well. I would say that all the room amenities you can enjoy in a hotel and much more were provided. Other than the hallways and toilet not having heater system during the winter/spring season we survived by rushing to get to the rooms which had individual AC/heater. Hiro-san lent us a portable heater to use in the toilet but it was not enough to keep us warm. The house came with a mobile phone for us to access only their office in case we needed assistance. I asked permission from Hiro-san if I can bring the phone with me while exploring the city and he agreed. So for me, it's the best personal touch in providing customer service which made my family feel safe and secure.
.
Hiro-san was so helpful to answer all our inquiries, make recommendations and brief us with our surroundings. He made us feel welcomed and best of all he can speak very fluent english.

Getting around Kyoto would require a lot of walking and if you are a bit more adventurous biking would be a good choice. The most convenient means to go around is to take the Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass. You can buy the "Travelcard" in the subway station or tourist information center "KYO Navi" before starting off which allows you to do unlimited travel with a fix rate of 500yen compared to the general single ride cost 220yen. Your other option is to do the Kyoto City Subway One-Day Pass which costs 300yen compared to the general minimum fare of 210yen.

Given the chance to go back, I would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend this place to any family who wants a TRUE Japanese experience.

We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Shouban. We take great pride in the accommodation offering both the traditional aspects of a machiya, while being equipped with the comforts of modern amenities so we are thrilled to hear that you were able to make the most of both worlds. As you mentioned, the luggage delivery service and travelcard are just some of the ways that make it easier to travel within the city. “Old and New Kyoto Beauty”
Reviewed 27 April 2013 for a stay in April 2013

My husband, our kids, their partners and I stayed at Shoubuan and Suoan for two nights in April, 2013. Machiya Residence Inn has a feel of old Kyoto home, yet it is modern and spacious. We were delighted to have this experience of tatami rooms and futons (they have two beds also). From beautiful Shoubuan's bathroom, you can see an enclosed authentic Japanese garden. The place is close to many stores and bus stops. We tried nearby Sento (Public Bath) one night and we found it relaxing and fun. Keyless entry is convenient and free wifi is a bonus. We thank you, Hiro for his assistance. He was helpful and knowledgeable.

Thank you for your kind comments. We are so happy to hear that you were able to make the most of your machiya experience by sleeping on the futons in the tatami rooms and enjoying the view of the authentic Japanese garden. We are also pleased to hear you ventured out and went to the public bath. Bathing is a daily ritual for Japanese and is deeply valued for its relaxation and therapeutic qualities. We hope that you will choose to stay here again on your next visit to Kyoto. Hiro sends his warmest regards.
